In a throwback AMA, Namrata Shirodkar talked about her bond with sister, Shilpa Shirodkar and also addressed whether there is any sibling rivalry between them.
Shilpa Shirodkar made her Bollywood debut in 1989 with Ramesh Sippy’s film, Bhrashtachar. After a brief stint, Shilpa quit acting in 2000 when she got married to a UK-based banker, Aparesh Ranjit. After a 13-year gap, she made her comeback in 2013 with Zee TV’s show Ek Mutthi Aasmaan. Now she is back in the limelight as she is participating in the Salman Khan-hosted reality show, Bigg Boss season 18.
Like Shilpa, her sister Namrata Shirodkar was a popular actress in the 1990s. Winner of the Miss India 1993 title, Namrata is known for her work in Kachche Dhaage, Vaastav: The Reality, Pukar, Astitva, and the crossover cinema Bride and Prejudice. Namrata quit the entertainment world after she tied the knot with Tollywood’s heartthrob, Mahesh Babu.
Shilpa ventured into films before Namrata did. In an old Rediff AMA, Namrata talked about her bond with Shilpa. When asked whether she wanted to be like her sister, Shilpa, Namrata stated that she wasn’t sure if she could match up to her sister’s talent. In her words:
“Well!! I am not too sure I can match my sister’s talent. But let’s hope for the best.”
Shilpa and Namrata were the top actresses of the late 90s, and both of them proved their versatility. In the same interaction, when Namrata was questioned about sibling rivalry, she denied it and said:
“There is no sibling rivalry as you might assume. We are best of friends.”
Shilpa Shirodkar and Namrata Shirodkar share a warm bond, which strengthened after their parents' deaths. We have often seen the two ladies penning heartfelt notes for each other on their respective social media handles. Shilpa and Namrata are the granddaughters of the legendary Marathi theatre and television actress, Meenakshi Shirodkar.
Shilpa is younger than Namrata, but people often get confused as she made her Bollywood debut before Namrata. Talking about the same, Shilpa once said:
“That’s because I did everything before Namrata. I joined films before her. I married before and became a mother first.”
Shilpa Shirodkar worked with some of the leading names of Hindi cinema, including Amitabh Bachchan, Govinda, Sridevi, Suniel Shetty, Shah Rukh Khan, and many more. Some of Shilpa Shirodkar's famous films include Trinetra, Hum, Khuda Gawah, Aankhen, Pehchaan, Gopi Kishan, Bewafa Sanam, Mrityudand, Gaja Gamini, and many more. She quit films at the peak of her career when she got married to a UK-based merchant banker named Apresh Ranjit.
