The actress-turned-filmmaker, Nandita Das opened up about single parenting and her equation with her son, Vihaan.
Nandita Das is one of the most talented actresses and directors in Bollywood. She has worked in some of the most amazing films like Fire, Manto, Bawandar and many more. The actress made her directional debut with the film, Firaaq, in 2008. Currently, Nandita is garnering a lot of attention for her upcoming release, Zwigato. Apart from being an exceptional filmmaker, Nandita is a doting mother to her son, Vihaan. For the unversed, the actress was earlier married to entrepreneur-turned-actor, Subodh Maskara. However, later, the duo parted ways in 2017 after 7 years of marriage.
Recently, Nandita Das appeared in Pinkvilla's series, Woman Up, season 4. During her appearance, the actress-turned-filmmaker talked about her upcoming film, facing colourism and more. She even opened up about single parenting and how society takes it. Talking about the same, Nandita mentioned that single parenting is difficult, but it is fantastic as well at the same time. Further, the actress even recalled a past incident and revealed how society made her feel guilty for going to work while leaving her son at home. In her words:
"Firstly, there is so much of a burden of that. I remember I was walking into Vihaan's school once and this mother came to me and she said, 'Oh I am feeling so good I've resigned as the CEO of my company'. I was like 'oh, what happened?' She was like 'they will get another CEO but my child won't get another mother'. It suddenly put that guilt in my heart. I was like 'shit, but I am working'. Vihaan was maybe six or seven and I was doing Manto at that time. I was like I am going to start my shoot aur mujhe aise bura lagne laga."

Further, in the interview, Nandita mentioned that over the years, she realised that it is very important for the kids to see their mother's work. She even stated that if a child sees their mother working, they will respect her desires, dreams and value. Talking about the importance of being independent, Nandita said that a child who grows up in an environment where their mother is a working woman, they are more like to have better relationship with other women.
In the same interview, Nandita even opened up about her equation with her son, Vihaan. Talking about the same, the actress stated that single parenting is tough for a working woman, but it has its perks too. The actress even revealed that she and her son share a great bond, and they often travel together. In her words:
"Single parenting is difficult because you are the go-to person for everything and you take on and especially if you are a working person and you are a woman who's grown up with guilt which is our middle name for most women and we all struggle with it but there are also lovely joys of it. I and my son have a lovely bond and we chat about so many things, we travel together."

Being an avid social media user, Nandita keeps sharing adorable glimpses of her life. For instance, on November 5, 2022, the actress had taken to her Instagram handle and shared a series of pictures with her son from their vacation in East Africa. In one of the pictures, we could see Nandita posing happily with her son. For the day out, she donned a grey t-shirt with black pants, while her son, Vihaan opted for a blue full-sleeved t-shirt with beige-hued trousers. In another picture, her son could be seen all decked up in the Masai community's traditional outfit.
Nandita Das and Subodh Maskara got married on January 2, 2010. The duo embraced parenthood after the birth of their baby boy, Vihaan on August 11, 2010. However, their lovely paradise ended after Nandita and Subodh decided to part ways. It was in the year 2017 when they got divorced amicably. Since then, Nandita has been raising her son as a single parent.
