In a recent interview, Naseeruddin Shah opened up about the key aspect of his and his wife, Ratna Pathak's strong relationship and long marriage.
Naseeruddin Shah and Ratna Pathak can safely be hailed as a power couple of their time. For the unversed, Naseeruddin was earlier married to Manara Sikri, and they had a daughter, Heeba. However, things didn't go well with them, and they parted ways. Later, it was in 1982 when Naseeruddin got married to the love of his life, Ratna Pathak. The duo also has two sons, Imaad and Vivaan. It's been more than two decades since Naseer and Ratna have been together, and now the veteran actor has opened up about the key aspect of their happy relationship and long marriage.
In a recent interview on the We Are Yuvaa YouTube channel, Naseeruddin Shah talked about his wife, Ratna Pathak. The actor shared that it is not that his wife is Rasmalai. She rather is capable of speaking harsh words if required. However, speaking about how they met, Naseeruddin shared that he met Ratna when she was just 17 years old. The actor mentioned that there was something in Ratna that he took a liking to her. Shah then shared that, eventually, their friendship grew stronger, and he got to see how Ratna is a responsible and meticulous person. Naseeruddin said:
"We did a play together when she was 17. I don’t know what it was about her, but I took a liking to her. And as the days went by, our friendship grew stronger. And I realised that she is a very responsible person, and a very meticulous person. I’m all over the place, but we’ve found a balance."

In the same interview, Naseeruddin opened up about what kept his and Ratna Pathak's relationship strong through all these years. The actor said that he and his wife never had any fixed expectations, and they never assigned any fixed roles to each other. For instance, Nasseruddin shared he doesn't know how to cook, so he does the dishes or cleans up. Naseeruddin said that he and Ratna always maintained their friendship and kept discovering new things about each other. Elaborating more on the same, Naseeruddin stated:
"But I believe our marriage has worked because neither of us had any fixed expectations from each other. We didn’t assign fixed roles for each other. Although I told her that I don’t know how to cook food immediately. But I offered to clean up and do the dishes. More or less, everything has been a surprise. And I kept discovering new things about her, new qualities. And I hope she has as well. But most importantly, we’ve maintained our friendship.”
Further, in the same interview, Naseeruddin Shah said that his family had always followed a patriarchal set-up, and thus, he decided not to repeat the same mistake and boast himself as the 'lord of the house'. The actor also stated he believes that Ratna is more capable than him. Talking more about the same, Naseeruddin said:
"Khana lagao, paani laao’, I never did all this, nor did I impose such a dynamic. We consult with each other about everything. I believe she is a more capable person than me. I’m sure I can beat her in a physical fight, but I don’t need to test her skills, she’s very strong.”
Earlier, in an interview with Humans of Bombay, Naseeruddin Shah said that his wife, Ratna has always been with him from thick to thin, through difficult times to good times, and the main reason for that is because they have remained friends throughout.

In the same interview, the actor also shared that at first, Ratna's parents thought him a drug addict and ill-tempered. Ratna's parents were against their union as Naseeruddin was a divorcee by then. However, Ratna fought with her parents for him and never left his hand.
