Neelam Kothari and her linkup with Govinda were widely discussed in the '90s. However, not many know that they were never in a relationship.
Neelam Kothari was linked with Govinda for the longest time. Reports were rife that Govinda was madly-in-love with Neelam, and at a point, he even broke off his wedding with Sunita. However, for the first time, Neelam Kothari addressed the rumours surrounding her linkup with Govinda, and how she was scared of the press back then.
Recently, in an interview with Hautterfly, Neelam Kothari was questioned about her relationship with Govinda in the '90s, which was widely talked about. The actress clearly stated that it wasn't a relationship. Neelam added that rumours were part of every actor's life back in those days as there was no one to clarify.
Neelam added that they were scared of the press because of the power of paper and pen. She further added that if people would do more than 2-3 films together, they were assumed to be dating. She was quoted as saying:
"If you did more than 2-3 films, it was just understood that… (you were dating)."
Govinda shared that during the shoot of his first film, Iljaam (1986), he used to feel shy while romancing his co-star, Neelam. The actor said that they had to shoot a romantic song, and he couldn't do it. He was quoted as saying:
"I remember during my first film, I had to shoot a romantic song with Neelam, and I just couldn't do it. From the corner, Saroj (Khan) held me and inquired whether I had ever romanced a girl! I said 'no', and she immediately asked one of her assistant choreographers to teach me how to do the romantic steps, and It was quite something."
For the uninitiated, Govinda had first met Neelam during the shooting of his debut film, Ilzaam, in 1986. In an old interview with the Stardust, Govinda had shared the details of their first meeting. He had said:
"I remember the first time I met her. At Pranlal Mehta’s office. She was wearing white shorts. Her long hair falling straight, like an angel’s. ‘Hello’, she said politely, and I was scared to reply because my knowledge of English was embarrassing. It still is. And I wondered how I would communicate with her on the sets. I had never imagined I would work with her. She was a distant dream."
During the same interview, Govinda had revealed he was smitten by Neelam's beauty. He had even tried to mould his then-girlfriend and now-wife, Sunita Ahuja, like Neelam and would often ask her to become like the actress, which invariably had enraged Sunita.
