Neena Gupta Recalls How Masaba Saved Her Life From A Blast On The Sets Of 'The Sword Of Tipu Sultan'

During the launch of her autobiography, Neena Gupta recalled an incident when her daughter, Masaba Gupta saved her life.

Neena Gupta is one of the most promising actors of Bollywood. After proving her mettle in acting with her breakthrough performance in Woh Chokri, Neena had played versatile roles in theatre as well as commercial cinema. Proving her love for movies, Neena had made a resurgence in her career in 2018 with the comic-drama, Badhaai Ho.

Just like her bold and out of the box on-screen characters, Neena Gupta’s personal life too was always under the limelight. The 62-year-old has always been ahead of her times and never bothered about people’s opinion about her. From giving birth to her daughter, Masaba Gupta, out of wedlock to raising her single-handedly, Neena is the perfect example of women empowerment.

On June 14, 2021, Neena Gupta’s autobiography, Sach Kahun Toh was launched by actress, Kareena Kapoor Khan. In a candid conversation, Kareena highlighted an event from Neena’s book where she revealed how Masaba saved her life on the sets of Sanjay Khan’s serial, The Sword of Tipu Sutan.

Reminiscing the same, Neena said, “It was a traumatic experience. They (the makers) were doing my wedding scene. Masaba was one-and-a-half years old. That day, Masaba had a little fever. So, I didn’t take her along on the sets. But later, in the afternoon, I sent back my car and I got her to the shoot. At that time, I was feeding her in between the shoot. I sneaked out of the studio. I reached my room. I picked up Masaba and I heard a blast.”

 Elaborating the tragic incident and wondering how she got saved, Neena continued, “When I came out, I saw a lightman coming towards me. He was on fire. I was looking at him. He called me to help. I remember I said, ‘how can I help when I have a child with me.’ They took me to the main building where we had the office. We were sent home. It was too traumatic. Even now, when I think about it, I wonder how I got saved.”

When asked what was the motivation behind writing her autobiography, Neena Gupta revealed that she has been writing it from the past 20 years. Neena further said that every time she would start writing, she would think, who will be interested in reading about her life but it was during the lockdown, when she finally thought of sharing every detail of her life.

Neena retorted that she had spilled everything about her personal life in her book. In her words, “Things I have been hiding inside me for years is out now. I feel even if one person doesn’t commit mistakes I did after reading my book, it is worth it.”
