Neena Gupta Recalls Filmmaker, Girish Karnad's Warning To Her, Says, 'You Will Never Get A...'

Neena Gupta talked about not bagging any main roles of a heroines, and also recalled how eminent filmmaker, Girish Karnad warned her about it earlier.

Neena Gupta is one of the most talented actresses in the showbiz world currently. The diva proved the world how one can restart work in their second innings, at that too with such promising success consecutively. After making her comeback, Neena has worked in some fabulous films like Badhaai Ho, Lust Stories 2, Uunchai, Sardar Ka Grandson and others. And now, Neena shared what it felt like being type-casted to a few roles and why she didn’t manage to bag any main heroine roles.

Neena Gupta shares being restricted to similar kind of roles and not being a typical heroine in films

In a latest interaction with The Indian Express, Neena Gupta recalled frequently playing comic and silly roles, after she did one such film titled Saath Saath in 1982. The film unfortunately type-casted her into similar opportunities and roles, and thereafter, added how filmmaker, Girish Karnad also warned her about the same. She mentioned:

“He said now you will never get a heroine role, you will never get a lead. And that’s what happened. Because once you do a comedy, especially a woman, then you are finished. They cannot imagine you in a romantic lead role. And for many years, I got offers to do the same role, same clothes, same spectacles, same everything."

Neena shares her initial shock after realising the difference between theatre and mainstream films

For the unversed, Neena Gupta is an alumnus of the prestigious National School of Drama in Delhi. In the same interview, the actress spoke about her foundational learning years, which took place in the premiere institute and added after joining films, she realised the massive difference between the two worlds. In her words:

“I didn’t know that this is a business. And I didn’t know the rules of the business so I made a lot of mistakes.”

When Neena recollected her upbringing under a strict mother

In one of her previous interviews with The Indian Express, Neena Gupta reminisced about her childhood and revealed being brought up in a restrictive environment, under the tutelage of her extremely strict mother.  She recalled how her mother never made her aware of things like sex and periods, and also mentioned how the former even made her avert roaming out with her female friends.

When Neena spoke about facing social stigma after the birth of her daughter, Masaba

For the unversed, in her personal life, Neena gave birth to her daughter, Masaba without marriage and out of wedlock with her erstwhile partner and cricketer, Vivian Richards. In a previous interview with Brut India, Neena spoke up about facing a lot of social stigma for single-handedly raising her daughter. She mentioned:

“I am not a rebel. I am a chooha (mouse). I am not unconventional. I am the most conventional person right now. Just because I had a baby out of wedlock, which millions of women have in India and out… But the media made me into, ‘Ah brave’.
