Neena Gupta once talked about being left homeless with her baby, Masaba as her aunt threw them out in the middle of the night.
Neena Gupta is a woman who has never compromised on her ideologies and has broken many stereotypes. Even when the situations around her were topsy-turvey, Neena believed in herself and moved ahead, facing all the challenges while standing with her head held up high. The actress, who has been the perfect example of women's empowerment, dealt with a lot of lows in her life.
From her engagement being called off to falling for an already married man and later giving birth to his child, Neena had been through all. Despite knowing the patriarchy around her, Neena gave birth to Masaba and raised her single-handedly. Amid the many struggles she faced in her life, Neena was also left homeless once in the middle of the night.
In an interaction with Housing.com, Neena Gupta opened up about the traumatic experience she had when Masaba was a baby. It was during the 80s when Neena sold her apartment for a three BHK flat in Mumbai and moved in with her aunt and uncle for a short period. Recalling how she was kicked out by her aunt in the middle of the night, Neena shared:
“I shifted to my aunt’s house, where I had stayed before. I thought I stayed there so much of the time, and I just came back to my house to sleep. Since Masaba was little then, my aunt used to help look after my baby. But one day, she threw me out in the middle of the night. She kicked me out. I had no money left. There was this one night where I had nowhere to go with a baby.”
However, Neena’s uncle felt bad for her and offered her an empty apartment in Juhu that had been unoccupied for 20 years. After cleaning the house in the middle of the night with her small baby, Neena was asked to leave from there also. Elaborating on the same, she said:
“Before shifting with them, I had already told both of them that I am now going to be without a house, so are you okay with me moving in? They said yes then. Now, my uncle felt very bad so he shifted me to his mother-in-law's house in Juhu, which had been shut for 20 years. There were cobwebs in the house, it looked rusty. I went there, and I cleaned that house with a small baby. But soon, I was asked to leave that house as well."
Since she had nowhere to go, Neena went to the builder, asked for a refund, and explained her situation to him. The builder sympathised with her and gave her a full refund without deducting a penny. Despite the struggles, Neena never gave up hope or compromised in her life.
With an M.Phil. in Sanskrit, Neena left her comfortable life in Delhi to pursue her passion for acting. After working in parallel cinema, Neena made her breakthrough with the critically acclaimed film, Woh Chokri, for which she bagged a National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress. Neena Gupta established her profile in Indian cinema through films like Mandi, Rihaee, and Drishti. In 2018, she made a resurgence in her career with the comic-drama, Badhaai Ho.
Neena Gupta is a woman with resilience, and despite all the falls, she has always risen and proved her worth to the world.
