Neetu Kapoor once recalled how her husband and veteran actor, Rishi Kapoor had reacted on learning about being diagnosed with cancer.
Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh have always been counted as one of the evergreen couples the Hindi film industry has ever witnessed. The duo, who got married in 1980, enjoyed long years of togetherness and marital bliss along with their children, Ranbir Kapoor and Riddhima Kapoor Sahni. Unfortunately, the magical bubble was burst with Rishi Kapoor’s tragic death in 2020, after battling a prolonged fight with cancer. With his passing away, while the film industry and his fans received a massive shock, it was all the more tormenting for his family, for whom it was an irreplaceable loss.
Ever since Rishi Kapoor was diagnosed with the deadly disease of cancer, it was his family and especially his wife, Neetu Singh who wasted no time and flew him down to New York, such that he would receive the best of treatments. But all of this was easier said than done, and proof of the same was found when Neetu Kapoor, in an interview with Times Now had revealed the reaction of herself and her kids, and more so, Rishi Kapoor himself when he learnt about such a grave state of matter about his health. Recalling how Rishi had been in denial for months, Neetu mentioned:
“My first reaction was, obviously very bad, I was devastated, my kids were devastated. We didn’t know what to do. But then we thought to ourselves that this is it, we have to deal with it. Where he (Rishi) is concerned, he was in denial. For 4-5 months, he was not himself. I think when you start accepting that this is your issue, then you are stronger. I feel he is much stronger for the past, maybe 5-6 months.”

Cancer is a deadly disease and its treatment is both prolonged and equally painful. When it came to Rishi Kapoor, while his physical pain and suffering were extreme, it was pacified by his darling wife, Neetu Singh who stood beside him like a strong pillar of strength. Moreover, she also tried and devised many ways to keep up the cheer surrounding her husband, such that he would not end up feeling morose and depressed. Spilling beans on the same, in an interview with Times Now, Neetu had recalled how she would often trick Rishi like a baby so that he would take his medicines on time. In her words:
“I used to behave like I used to play tricks around him, talk to the nurse about some restaurant and some good dish they have and then he would chip in saying ‘really? ok, let us try that. It's like I told you he became like my child and I wanted to do everything in my power that he should not be in pain, he should get whatever he wants.”
In the same interview, Neetu Kapoor revealed another special moment when she came across a stranger who motivated her to keep strong with Rishi Kapoor during his cancer treatment. The actress mentioned how her engaging social media posts that gave Rishi’s fans an update about his health, made her cross paths with a person who revealed how their pictures had motivated the latter’s father, who too was going through the same phase. Recalling that particular incident, she mentioned:
“I used to post the pictures on his Instagram just to keep the positivity going. I never put pictures where he was down and out. Once, I was waiting for the elevator in the hospital when he (Rishi) was admitted and a young boy came and told me ‘my father is going through the same thing and him was very depressed, we kept showing him your pictures and said see Rishi Ji is so happy and he is getting treated and those pictures made him come here and he wants to go through the treatment. I feel so nice that I helped somebody gain confidence that it can be dealt with.”
