Neha Gnanavel, producer KE Gnanavel Raja's wife, responded to an X post about Disha Patani's lack of screen time, and it has sparked controversy. She said Disha was only in the film to 'look pretty.'
Kanguva's start has been nothing short of disastrous, as it failed to hit the Rs. 100 crore mark in its first week. Audiences and critics with high expectations were left disappointed by the film that spanned two periods. From its poor screenplay to its unnecessarily loud volume, it seems like everyone is struggling to find something good to say about the Suriya-starrer. Among the film's many criticisms, fans of Disha Patani, who were excited about her Tamil debut, were enraged by her limited screen. As netizens brought up the same, Neha Gnanavel, wife of producer KE Gnanavel Raja, made a remark about Disha's screen time that has sparked major controversy online.
For the unversed, Disha Patani played the role of 'Angela' in Kanguva. Sadly, fans did not get to see as much of Disha in the film as they wanted due to her limited screen time. As is common in the digital age, many took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to express their frustration. Well, Neha Gnanavel, the wife of producer KE Gnanavel Raja, couldn't resist responding to one such critical tweet and wrote:
"Angela's character is not the whole movie Kanguva is about!!! Angela can't be in 2.5 hours of film!! Basic so yes, she was there to look pretty!!! It's one brain and perspective (director) presenting to crores of audiences! We welcome criticism not targeted propaganda."
Well, Neha's comment was met with strong criticism online, with netizens shaming her for her regressive thought process. Since then, Neha's tweet has been deleted. That could be the result of the strong backlash she faced. However, as she has yet to make any other comment, the real reason behind her deleting the tweet remains unknown.
Neha Gnanaveld wasn't the only wife to come out in support of Kanguva. Lead actor, Suriya's wife, Jyotika, also poured out her unwavering support for her husband amid the criticism. In a long note, she defended Suriya's decision to give something new a try in the world of cinema.
In her note, Jyotika confessed that even she had found the film's sound 'jarring in the first thirty minutes. However, she firmly stated that despite such issues, Kanguva was an "absolute cinematic experience". Jyotika continued in her note:
"I'm surprised with the negative reviews from media and certain fraternities, as it's not done by them to this high level for the most unintellectual big budget films I have seen earlier with age old stories, where women r stalked, double meaning dialogues r spoken and have the most over the top action sequences."
For the unversed, Kanguva was released on November 14, 2024, and ever since then, it has been subjected to intense criticism. Jyotika addressed the same in her note and said it had made her 'sad.' In Jyotika's words:
"It's sad that they chose this much negativity for Kanguva on day 1, even before the first show was over (seemed more like multiple group propagandas) when it actually deserves an applause for the concept and effort taken by the team to create 3D and such a magnificent visual!"
