In February 2018, India stood shocked when Nirav Modi Global Diamond Jewellery House’s founder, Nirav Modi was found guilty in the fraudulent cases of property, corruption, money laundering and in a 2 billion USD case of money laundering of Punjab National Bank. It seems there is no learning on his part when it comes to money. In a shocking recent news report, Nirav Modi sold fake diamond rings to a Canadian national that cost him US$200,000, his girlfriend and also led to his depression.
According to a report on South China Morning Post, Paul Alfonso, who got tricked into buying fake diamond rings, had no idea that Nirav is wanted in India and by the Interpol in a multi-crore banking fraud. Paul bought two diamond rings from the fraud jeweller in Hong Kong to propose his girlfriend and after she accepted his proposal, the party ended soon when they discovered that the diamond rings were fake.
Paul and Nirav first met in 2012 at the centennial celebrations of Beverly Hills Hotel. A few months later, they met again in Malibu and Paul, in his own words, ‘felt in him a kind of an older brother figure’.
After a few years, Paul called up Nirav and told him of his requirement of two special diamond engagement rings. Nirav replied to him, “Thank you for thinking of me when you’re making one of the most meaningful purchases in any man’s life”. The couple wanted to get the rings insured and whenever they asked Nirav about the papers, he would keep delaying it.
And later, when Alfonso's fiancee took the ring to the insurer herself, they found out that the stones were fake, and she broke up with him. Alfonso went into depression. He revealed to the media, “When she told me, I was like ‘That’s impossible. I spent US$200,000 on those rings. There’s no way they are fake. It’s Nirav we are talking about”. He got to know the truth about Nirav Modi and on this he revealed, “I am usually very careful when I am dealing with a big transaction like this, but again, this is Nirav. I would not imagine him trying to take a few hundred thousand from me when a guy is worth millions of dollars”.
About his fiancée breaking up with him, Paul was quoted as saying, “We broke up literally after one or two days. It was just too much for both of us to handle. It does not make sense to her, because she says: ‘You are a pretty smart guy, how did you let someone scam you out of US$200,000 without making sure the transaction was legitimate?”.
Finally, after a few months, filed a lawsuit against Nirav in the Superior Court of California, suing him for US$4.2 million dollars. The hearing is scheduled for January 2019.
Later, in an email to Nirav, Paul wrote, “Do you have any idea what kind of pain you’ve cost me and my now ex-fiancée? You’ve completely ruined such a wonderful occasion for me and her. You’ve ruined my life”. (You May Like: Kapil Sharma To Tie The Knot With Longtime Girlfriend Ginny Chatrath In 2018? Details Inside)
Well, we really hope that justice is done, and Paul Alphonso comes out of his depression soon.
