Do you know Nita Ambani once travelled to Sri Lanka in her private jet to buy kitchenware? Read on to learn more details about the same.
Mukesh Ambani and Nita Ambani are an inspiration to millions as they built their fortune from scratch. It is with sheer hard work and dedication that the Ambani family has achieved the immense wealth of USD 119.5 billion. While Mukesh is the richest man in Asia, his wife, Nita, is an equal partner to him.
Be it chairing her husband, Mukesh Ambani’s business, joining her son, Anant Ambani, in his weight-loss journey, planning grand weddings of her kids, deep involvement in social work, Nita Ambani has always been a one-woman army.
Apart from business, Nita is known for leading a lavish lifestyle. Just like her impeccable fashion and jaw-dropping jewellery, Nita has a keen eye when it comes to kitchenware. Her penchant for luxury once took her to Sri Lanka to purchase a unique set of crockery from Japan’s oldest porcelain manufacturer, Noritake.
However, the sheer decision to travel to Sri Lanka in her private jet to buy the crockery had a practical reason to it. Noritake is one of the prime brands of Japan and is celebrated for its porcelain crockery trimmed with 22-carat gold and platinum. However, the brand has its largest manufacturing hub in Sri Lanka. It also serves as an export base, which makes the products cheaper in Sri Lanka than in India.
As per a report in The Economic Times, a 50-piece Noritake dinner set with gold and platinum trim costs USD 300 to USD 500, which is approximately Rs. 25,000 to Rs. 42,000 in Sri Lanka. However, the same set costs USD 800 to USD 2000, which is approximately Rs. 67,000 to Rs. 1.6 lakh in India. So, buying the set from Sri Lanka saved Nita 80 percent of its costs.
Born into a middle-class Gujarati family in Mumbai, Nita completed her bachelor’s degree in Commerce at Narsee Monjee College of Commerce and Economics. After graduating, Nita became a school teacher. Nita was just 20 when she got married to Mukesh Ambani. When Mukesh proposed to Nita for marriage, she laid one condition, which was to continue her work post-marriage.
After her wedding to Mukesh Ambani, Nita Ambani taught at a school called St. Flower Nursery, where she received Rs. 800 per month as salary. In a throwback interview with Simi Garewal, Nita recalled people’s reactions to her salary and shared that they laughed at her; however, Nita was satisfied with her work. In the same interview, Mukesh Ambani chipped in and said that Nita would give her salary to him, and the money was used to pay for dinner at home.
After a few years, Nita Ambani joined the family business along with her husband, Mukesh Ambani. Today, she is the Chairperson of Reliance Foundation, Dhirubhai Ambani International School, owner of Mumbai Indians (Indian Premier League Cricket Team), and also a non-executive director of Reliance Industries.
At the Reliance Family Day held in Jamnagar in 2025, Mukesh Ambani talked about his family and the sacrifices made by his wife, Nita Ambani, to set up their business in Jamnagar. Speaking about the same, Mukesh heaped praises on Nita and revealed that every week, she would leave behind her small kids, Akash and Isha, who were four and Anant, who was just one, and travelled to Jamnagar. Despite the many struggles, Nita never compromised with work and helped him set up Reliance at Jamnagar.
