Pakistani-American comedian and actor, Kumail Nanjiani penned his dreamy love story with Emily V. Gordon for a film which later even got nominated for Oscar in 'Best Original Screenplay' category.
Cross-border love stories are never easy, and Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon's journey was no exception. Despite coming from different countries with polar opposite beliefs, and facing a major health crisis where one was hospitalised and in a coma for a long time, their love prevailed. Their story is a testament to the power of love in overcoming even the most challenging circumstances.
Kumail Nanjiani is an acclaimed Pakistani-American actor, comedian and writer. While Emily V. Gordon is an American writer and producer. The duo met at a comedy show and hit it off instantly, but their way ahead was full of hiccups, and they had to fight for their love till the very end.
The first meeting is always a turning factor in every love story, and Kumail and Emily's meet-cute was straight out of a fairytale. Nanjiani and Gordon first met in Chicago in 2006 when Gordon heckled the former during his comedy stage show. The duo connected on that very day but did not proceed any further until they met again. When the duo met a few days later, they not only exchanged numbers, but Emily also asked Kumail out for a casual meet-up. The duo then frequently stared onhand around with each other.
Kumail Nanjiani hails from Pakistan, and his parents wanted him to settle down with a girl from their country. So they were coercing him to meet girls and think about settling down. On the other hand, Kumail was scared to confess his attraction towards Emily in front of his parents and kept delaying the 'talk'. In Kumail's words:
"I couldn't imagine a universe where I ended up accepting an arranged marriage, but I also couldn't imagine telling my parents that. So I just deflected and delayed."
Throughout the whole time, Kumail did not commit to Emily about his feelings and kept her hanging. But the latter understood his dilemma and stood by his side as he tried to navigate life. Emily was also very respectful of Kumail's family's beliefs and respected their traditions.
While Kumail was trying to figure out life, Emily's health suddenly went for a toss. She went to the hospital for a routine checkup but suddenly fainted and entered an eight-days-long comma. During this entire time, Kumail was beside Emily and was caring for her. After she came back to her senses, she was diagnosed with Still's disease, a rare form of inflammatory arthritis. At this point, Kumail shared about his feelings with his family, who not only accepted Emily but were also very concerned about her health.
Emily gradually began to recover, and when she was back to health, the duo decided to tie the knot. In 2007, the couple got hitched in an intimate Pakistani ceremony amid the presence of their near and dear ones. Soon after, the couple moved to Los Angeles, which opened up a new chapter of their life.'
In 2015, Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon wrote their love story, which was adapted into a film, The Big Sick. The movie is a romantic comedy produced by Judd Apatow and stars Nanjiani, Ray Romano, Zoe Kazan, and Holly Hunter in lead roles. The film debuted in 2017 and beautifully portrayed their love story with funny elements.
The film was loved by both the masses and critics, so much so that it was nominated for the Oscars in the Best Screenplay category. The couple is still together and very much in love and proved that with passion and dedication, one can make a cross-border relationship work and even deal with health scares.
