Recently, spiritual guru Premanand Maharaj shared his progressive views on the concept of same-sex relationships. A video of the same went viral, and netizens showered him with praise.
India decriminalised homosexuality on September 6, 2018, when the Supreme Court decreed that Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code was unconstitutional. However, in the years since, same-sex relationships are still viewed as taboo in the country, and same-sex marriages remain illegal. Recently, a video of renowned spiritual guru Premanand Maharaj expressing his thoughts on the idea of same-sex relationships has gone viral, with many netizens lauding his ‘progressive mindset.’
Recently, a video of a young man seeking advice from the noted spiritual leader, Pemanand Maharaj, has gone viral due to the latter’s sound and progressive advice. The man was heard saying that his parents were pushing him to get married. However, he didn’t have the inclination to do so as he wasn’t attracted to women but to men.
In response to the query, Premanand Maharaj sincerely pleaded with all men in a similar dilemma to never ruin a girl’s life. Speaking specifically to the young man in question, the guru said:
"Aap apni mummy papa se apni baat puri share karo. Aap byaah bilkul mat karo. Usko ghar mein baitha kar, uski zindagi narak mat banao."
Premanand Maharaj also pointed out the fault logic behind young men saying they were too ashamed to discuss such things with their parents. He strongly asked them if they didn’t feel similar shame while ruining someone else’s life. Premanand Maharaj further added that expressing what God had instilled in oneself was never a matter of shame.
Premanand Maharaj further pleaded with parents of individuals dealing with such feelings to understand them. According to the spiritual guru, something innate to a person couldn’t be scolded or beaten out of them. On that note, Premanand Maharaj stated that it was much better to live life supporting each other.
Finally, the spiritual guru reiterated that we were now living in times where women were interested in women and men were interested in men. However, it was the responsibility of such individuals to inform their families about the same because if a woman who didn’t like men were to marry one, she would end up hating him and create an even worse situation, and vice versa.
Netizens were all praise for Premanand Maharaj’s progressive stance on the matter of same-sex relationships. One user penned, “This is so cool. Listen to the enlightened ones not incels on X who hate everything and everyone around them. Jai Maharaj ji. Another wrote, “He is a gem. That’s why Virat Kohli went there,” while one netizen commented, “Amazed with the clarity with which he speaks even on matters which perhaps is considered Taboo. Respect.”

India is home to approximately tens of millions of LGBTQIA+ people. However, same-sex marriages are yet to be legalised in the country. The Supreme Court decreed that members of the LGBTQIA+ community were allowed to be in relationships without enduring discrimination in October 2023. However, many could celebrate that win because they had to deal with the disappointment of learning that the same court declined to legalise same-sex unions.
