Radhika Verkaria faced a lot of struggles in her childhood as she had troubled saying her name. Read on to know more!
Radhika Vekaria, who is in her '30s, is making waves all over the world. The British-Indian-origin singer was nominated for Grammy Awards. She walked alongside notable artists like Anoushka Shankar and Ricky Kej in the category of Best New Age, Ambient or Chant Album. However, not many know that Radhika had a speech problem in her childhood and was not even able to speak her name properly.
Not many know Radhika Vekaria has been making waves with her music. However, Radhika revealed in an interview with People that she had a problem speaking her name. She had a bad speech impediment and got severely bullied for it. Radhika shared that she got bullied for expressing herself, which forced her to stay silent. She was quoted as saying:
"I had trouble just saying my name. I had a very bad speech impediment, and I was severely bullied for it. We get bullied for many things in life. Mine was my ability to express myself. And so that was something that forced me into the silence of my own mind."
Further, Radhika revealed that her speech problem had turned her into a good singer. The British-Indian-origin artist realised at a young age that she might be able to talk, but she could definitely sing, and it started her musical journey. She said:
"A lot of people who have a speech impediment actually are very good singers,When you add melody and a bit of cadence and a bit of music to it, it helps the mind relax and the nervous system relax. It creates a different neural pathway in the brain. So for me, singing makes me feel free."
Radhika revealed that her friends and family were impressed with the singer's talent. She shared that she really wanted to learn to speak but never thought that she would be able to speak on stage. She said:
"I never thought I would be speaking on stages and do all the things that I'm doing. It's really the essence of the music that I make that really helped me free my voice to be able to speak."
Radhika further revealed that as she approached adulthood, her speech impediment began to 'heal' on her own. She revealed that since the age of three she was able to sing and chant mantras easily. So, as an adult, she started practising it as a meditation, which had a tremendous effect on her. She was quoted as saying:
"As a 3-year-old, I would just naturally sing and chant mantras. So as an adult, when I went back into that as a meditation, I realized that it was having a tremendous effect on my ability to articulate and speak."
Radhika also revealed that it was years ago when she realised that she has power, as when she speaks, everyone listens to her. It was a major turning point, and she stopped being afraid of her shortcomings, and soon it was undetectable.
