A lot has been said and written about how women have a better memory than men. You must have experienced it when she would have tossed an argument by bringing a years ago reference to win it. Be it birthdays, anniversaries, special days, milestones or just anything you had said, if a woman says, ‘blah blah blah’ happened or claims that you said, ‘blah blah blah’, then believe her. But it was Ranbir’s past relationship with Bachna Ae Haseeno co-star, Deepika Padukone, which holds a special place in his heart. Ranbir and Deepika had an ugly breakup but gradually, they had let the bygones be bygones and are now a proof of exes can be best friends.
Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone have always been vocal about their relationship and breakup. In a throwback interview with the People magazine, Deepika had revealed that they both have heard about each other through their common make-up artists while shooting for their respective debut films, Om Shanti Om (Deepika’s) and Saawariya (Ranbir’s). Deepika had revealed that they had exchanged numbers the first time they had met and a few days later, Ranbir had asked her out on a lunch date. Deepika Padukone had stated, "This goes back to when we were shooting for our respective debut films [Om Shanti Om and Saawariya] and we had just heard about each other. We had common makeup artists -- Bharat and Dorris. Dorris is really fond of us, and she told me that he [Ranbir] is a really sweet guy and we should meet up. Dorris had once called him when she was with me. She said: "Why don't you guys talk?" That's when we first spoke and exchanged numbers. A few days later, almost around the same time [July 2007], he asked me out for lunch. He came and picked me up and we went to Celini at Grand Hyatt [Mumbai] for lunch." Recalling the day, Ranbir Kapoor had added, “We just happened to spend the day together.” Deepika Padukone had intervened, “It was meant to be only lunch, but lunch became coffee; coffee became cheesecake, and cheesecake became a movie.” Then Ranbir had said, “Mr Bean’s Holiday is the movie we watched at a theatre in Juhu.” To which, Deepika had continued, “That didn’t end there. It became a long drive and then he dropped me home. We started seeing each other on February 23, [2008]. It has been a year since we have known each other.” Recalling what Deepika had worn for their date, Ranbir had added, “I clearly remember she was wearing a white ganji and white linen pants. She had her hair tied up in a bun.” But Deepika had hated Ranbir’s shoes which he had sported on their first date, “I don’t remember really. He was wearing layered clothes: a T-shirt and a half sleeve shirt on top of it. Oh, how can I forget the ugly shoes that he had worn? What are those shoes called?” Ranbir had replied, “Hmmm…Timberland.”
At one point when Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone had set the bar high for relationship goals, post their breakup, they had inspired everyone with their on-screen chemistry and off-screen friendship. From walking on the ramp hand-in-hand, pulling each other’s legs in interviews, revealing secrets in media interactions, being proud of one another to staying in good terms with the other’s current partner, Ranbir and Deepika have taught everyone how to remain friends with ex-flames.
In a 2011 interview with Times Now, Ranbir Kapoor had revealed what he will cherish from his relationship of one-and-a-half-years, Ranbir Kapoor had continued, "I feel I have grown as a person. I have spent one and a half year with that person and that person has only added to my growth. I will cherish that experience with her because I have learned so much about life, commitment. You value commitment even more from these relationships. But I am not a commitment phobic. I have really just not met that person who I really want to settle down with."
