Rekha once shared how Amitabh Bachchan had calmed her nerves when she had to tell him, 'I hate you'.
Amitabh Bachchan could never accept his love for Rekha in public, but their romantic tale is an age-old story. The pair, whose chemistry made everyone remember their love interest, did many blockbuster movies. One of them was Silsila (1981), which also had Big B's wife, Jaya Bachchan. Rekha had once spoken about performing an emotional scene where she had to be cold-hearted and tell Amitabh, "I hate you". The actress recollected how she was not given time to prepare and how Big B calmed and rescued her.
Rekha, Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan's Silsila became a cult classic. However, filming the same was challenging. Rekha, back in 1994, had opened up in an interview with Dinesh Rajeha, stating she had to deliver an emotional dialogue in front of 15,000 people. Yash Chopra had not given her the preparation time for the dialogue, so Big B helped her with the scene by telling her the story of James Dean. In Rekha's words:
“It was such an intense scene and there were 15,000 people on the location at five in the morning. I had major lines to speak, crying and all. Then Amitji related an incident. He said, James Dean in a film called Giant faced a similar dilemma. He just turned around and did Number 1 (urinated) in front of the crowd. That made him feel on top of the world. James Dean thought to himself, ‘Isse bura kya ho sakta hai?’ and gave a perfect shot."
Rekha, going ahead in the interview, revealed how calm she felt after Big B spoke to her before she had to shoot the intense scene. She even mentioned that she was made to feel better. This was because when the filming of the scene was done, the audience hooted, ''Ooooh". Rekha could not stop hugging the legendary actor and revealed:
"I said to Amitji, ‘Excuse me, that really makes me feel better.’ He said, ‘I don’t mean it literally, but you know what I mean, come on. This is acting’. Start, camera, action sunte hi sab chup ho gaye. End mein when I hugged Amitji, toh sab bole, ‘Ooooh’. I had a hard time trying to control my expression."
It has been revealed in multiple reports that Rekha and Big B's love story had begun on the sets of their movie, Do Anjaane. The movie had given a transformation to Rekha's image in the Bollywood film fraternity. Apart from Silsila the rumoured ex-pair did movies like Khoon Pasina, Ganga Ki Saugandh, Suhaag, Muqaddar Ka Sikandar, Ram Balram, Mr. Natwarlal to name a few.
When they had started having an affair, Big B and Rekha used to meet in Rekha's friend's bungalow. According to an India Today report, their affair came into the limelight when Big B lost his cool on one of his fellow co-stars, who had misbehaved with Rekha.
