Rishi Kapoor Pens 'Thank You' Note For Grandfather Prithviraj Kapoor On His 113th Birth Anniversary

On November 3, 2019, the world remembered the baton-bearer of Indian cinema, Prithviraj Kapoor on his 113th birth anniversary. Rishi Kapoor posted a picture with him and wrote a 'thank you' note.

Learning to walk by holding the hand of our grandparents and enjoying vacations with them, remains our most cherished memories of childhood. No matter how much time we have spent with our grandparents, we have always craved for more.

We all love to enjoy watching movies on the silver screens and love the performances of the actors. But do you know, who was the pioneer behind making all this possible for all of us? It was none other than the late legend, Prithviraj Kapoor. The Kapoor’s are one of the first families to star in the movies and Prithviraj ji had started his acting career with India’s first talkie movie, Alam Ara. Prithviraj Kapoor’s grandson, Rishi Kapoor had started his career as a junior artist with his grandfather at the mere age of 22. On November 3, 2019, the Kapoors remembered Prithviraj ji on his 113th birth anniversary. Rishi ji took to his Twitter handle and posted an endearing picture with his grandfather and wrote a heartfelt thank you note as the birthday wish. He penned, “Blessed by my grandparents. The man who started it all way back 1928 at the age of 22 - as a junior artist. Happy “113th” Birthday, Dadaji! Kept that legacy going. The baton is now in the hands of the next generation!"

Bollywood actress, Shabana Azmi, who had shared the same neighbourhood as of Prithviraj Kapoor had also remembered him on his birth anniversary. Shabana ji's mother Shaukat Kaifi had worked with the late actor in the 1970 movie, Heer Raanjha. She took to her Twitter handle and shared some unknown facts. She wrote, “My mother Shaukat Kaifi who worked with Prithvi Theatres tells the most amazing stories about his compassion and humanity. I am lucky to have had him as our neighbour in Janki Kutir for many years.”  

The legacy that Prithviraj Kapoor had started was taken forward by his sons, Raj Kapoor, Shammi Kapoor and Shashi Kapoor. The next generation had kept the flag high with their outstanding performances. Prithviraj ji had started a theatre with the name ‘Prithvi’, which was an on wheels theatre troupe with no definite structure. Prithviraj Kapoor had nurtured a deep love for theatre and acting throughout his life and had acted in over 2,660 plays as a lead star. Prithviraj ji had a deep understanding of scripts and foretold every emotion beautifully through his plays. His son, Shashi Kapoor in an interview to Rediff in 2003, had talked about his father’s choice of scripts and had said, “My father’s basic request or dictum to the writers was to write plays that dealt with contemporary problems. Partition was about to happen, and he wanted the anxieties of the people to be dealt with in their plays.”

The 1971 movie, Kal Aaj Aur Kal, had featured three generations of the Kapoor family, Prithviraj Kapoor, his son, Raj Kapoor and grandson, Randhir Kapoor. This is not the only movie where the Kapoor generation had acted together. In Raj Kapoor's film Awaara, Prithviraj's father, Dewan Basheswarnath Kapoor had done a cameo role which was his only role in his lifetime.
