'Anupamaa' fame, Rupali Ganguly opened up about facing criticism over her age and body post embracing motherhood.
Rupali Ganguly is one of the leading ladies in the television industry. She began her acting career at the age of seven with a film, Saaheb. However, she received fame only after portraying the role of the middle-class and unapologetic, 'Monisha Sarabhai' in the serial, Sarabhai vs Sarabhai. Currently, the actress is leading all the headlines for her famous serial, Anupamaa. Recently, Rupali opened up about her career, facing age shaming and more.
In an interview with ETimes, Anupamaa fame, Rupaly Ganguly opened up about being body-shamed post embracing motherhood. Talking about the same, the actress mentioned that she gained a lot of weight post-delivery of her baby boy, Rudransh. She even revealed people used to call her 'moti'. Rupali even recalled an incident and revealed that an actress friend of hers said that she had become 'aunty' after the birth of her son. Elaborating more about being fat-shamed, Rupali stated:
"I started eating different things and I was 83 kilos and I was very fat. When I would take my son to the pram for a stroll, people would say “Arre Tu toh Monisha hai Na, kitni Moti hogayi”. Maybe someone must have said that in a very nice way, but you feel bad. Won baat tab chubh jaati hai. An actress friend of mine came to meet me and she told me, Arre Tu toh aunty ban gayi. These things affect you mentally, they stay and bother you. People don’t have the right to call you aunty, moti, you will decide what you want to be called."

Further, in the same conversation, Rupali opened up about facing criticism for having wrinkles and ageing. Talking about the same, the actress mentioned that even after doing a hit show like Anupamaa, she had gone through body shaming and age shaming. Rupali even revealed that many people on social media keep on commenting that she looks older than Gaurav Khanna (her on-screen husband). Elaborating more about it, she stated that she is proud of her wrinkles and that rather than talking about her age, people should focus on her work. In her words:
"I have gone through body shaming, age shaming even after Anupamaa. Arre your wrinkles are visible, arre that fat lady, yes I have wrinkles and I am proud of them. I am proud of what I am today. After three years of Anupamaa, I can say I accept the way I am."
Further, in the same conversation, Rupali revealed that she was never ambitious abouther career and all she wanted was a family. Talking about the same, the actress revealed that her chances of becoming a mother was very less because of her thyroid. However, with God's grace, she conceived and delivered her baby without any complications. Further, Rupali stated that after the birth of a child, a mother is put under too much pressure and the same happened with her, as she did not lactate. She also mentioned how she judged herself for not being able to feed her son. Asking all the new moms not to take the pressure, Rupali said:
"I wanted to be a mother and have a child. But due to thyroid, my maternity count was very low. My son was nothing short of a miracle baby. There were no complications during pregnancy as such and I had a very smooth pregnancy. Once the child is born, we women put too much pressure on ourselves that only breast milk should be given, again the conditioning that you have got as a child, you follow that. I did not lactate and it is fine. I want to tell all the mothers. I totally killed and judged myself, I felt like a failed mother over it that I can’t even feed my baby. I psyched myself completely."

After the birth of her son, Rudransh, Rupali had taken a sabbatical from the television industry. However, when the team of Anupamaa approached her, the actor in her couldn't say no. With the support of her husband, Ashwin and their son, Rudransh, Rupali returned to the acting world. Earlier, in an interview with the Times of Indian, the actress had opened up about the challenges she faced resuming work after her delivery. Talking about the same, she mentioned that playing a lead character in the 40s without having an industry-standard body is a tough task. However, she is happy that it worked out for her.
