Rupali Ganguly Was Inspired By PM Narendra Modi's Gujarati Accent For 'Anupamaa', 'Lot Of Stuff I..'

Rupali Ganguly, famous for her TV serial 'Anupamaa', recently revealed how Prime Minister Narendra Modi's speeches helped her pick up the Gujarati accent for her character in the serial.

Rupali Ganguly is amongst the most popular faces in the Indian television industry. She started her career in showbiz with the 2004 sitcom, Sarabhai vs. Sarabhai and then appeared in several other projects including the reality show, Bigg Boss. Moreover, Rupali’s ongoing stint in the serial, Anupamaa, has once again made her one of the most popular Indian television actresses, and also the highest-paid one. According to several reports, she charges Rs 3 lakh per episode.

Rupali Ganguly says she learnt Gujarati accent from PM Narendra Modi

In the TV serial, Anupamaa, Rupali portrays the character of a strong-willed Gujarati homemaker. The actress revealed in an interview how she trained herself to speak Gujarati fluently. While speaking to CNBC, Rupali shared her thoughts on observing people and taking inspiration from them. Further revealing how she picked up her Gujarati accent from the honourable Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, Rupali Said:

“For me, when I saw Anupamaa, I saw her not speaking English. I saw her speaking Hindi with a Gujarati accent. So, I wanted to do that. A lot of stuff I picked up from the honourable Prime Minister. When you hear his speeches, there are certain words he speaks in Hindi, which have a pre-dominant Gujarati accent and he does not shy away from that. He owns it. The way he holds his roots is what I picked for Anupamaa.”

The Anupamaa actress also shared that she had a Gujarati neighbour since childhood and that she's inspired by her pronunciation for her hit serial. Rupali said that she used to visit her neighbour’s house to have food sometimes, and that’s when she caught the accent.

Rupali Ganguly talks about how the Bengali community used to look down upon her

In the same interview, Rupali also opened up about her struggling days. The actress said that she used to take up any and every project just to make ends meet. She shared that the Bengali community, especially used to look down upon her for the same reason, and made her feel like an ‘outcast’. However, she did not pay much heed to the noise surrounding her and toiled day in and day out. In her words:

“Television was again, struggling days. I had to run the home, so whatever work came along, I took it. It was looked down upon, especially in the Bengali community. So, you’re kind of an outcast. People would feel sorry for me because I was doing television, and I didn’t care because, at that time, we needed to run the house.”

Rupali Ganguly took up any projects just to admit her father in a good hospital

Rupali further talked about never having any dreams or ambitions. Calling her father, the late Anil Ganguly, her inspiration and God, the actress shared that she never wanted to admit her father to a municipal hospital. Hence, she worked in order to treat him at a good reputable hospital like Leelavati. In her words:

“I’ve never had ambitions. I’ve never had dreams. My thing was I didn’t want my father to be in a municipal hospital. I wanted him to be in a good hospital like Leelavati. For that, it was imperative that I work. I think me, even my brother, there’s so much respect for whatever little we get that we want to make the maximum out of it. I would do anything for my Papa; he is my inspiration, he is my god, and he still is, of course.”
