Salim Khan Says He Couldn't Afford Rs.110 Room In Mumbai, Recalls How He Fell For First Wife, Salma

In Amazon Prime's docu-series, 'Angry Young Men', Salim Khan talked about his initial struggles when he arrived in the City of Dreams, Mumbai. He also recalled his love story with Salma Khan.

Salman Khan's father, Salim Khan, is one of the most renowned names in the Hindi film industry. He is best known for writing screenplays for several Bollywood films, including the blockbuster hits Zanjeer, Sholayand Deewar. Salim Khan is better known as one half of the Salim-Javed duo, the other half being Javed Akhtar.

Salim Khan talks about his initial struggles in Mumbai

Recently, Angry Young Men, a docu-series capturing Salim-Javed's 11-year journey in the industry, was released on the streaming platform Amazon Prime. In one of the episodes of the limited series, Salman Khan's father, Salim Khan, made some revelations about his life when he just arrived in Mumbai.

In the revelation, the popular screenwriter disclosed that he used to live at Marine Drive’s Marina Guest House for Rs. 55 per month for half the room when he had just arrived in the City of Dreams. Salim Khan shared that he initially wanted to rent the entire room for Rs. 110, but due to financial crunches, he couldn't do so. He was quoted as saying:

"I used to pay Rs 55 rent per month for half a room. My first ambition was to rent the entire room for Rs 110, but that wish was never fulfilled."

Salim Khan left behind the comforts of his home in Indore in order to make his career in acting in Mumbai. In the same revelation, the screenwriter recalled his elder brother's saying, who had mentioned that Salim would come running back home once he understood the reality. However, he was determined to make his career. Hence, he struggled his way up. Salim Khan said:

"I had no choice. When I was leaving for Mumbai, my eldest brother told me this is not required, you’ll come running back. We had a comfortable lifestyle back in Indore, but I didn’t want to ask for money from home, so I struggled."

Meanwhile, Salim Khan also discussed how he fell in love with his first wife, Salma Khan (Sushila Charak), who is the mother of Salman, Arbaaz, Sohail and Alvira Khan. Salma lived in Salim's neighbourhood, and the two would often steal glances at one another from their respective families. Salman's mother used to live in the Regi House building in Mahim.

Salma was just 17 when she met 24-year-old Salim Khan for the first time. In the revelation, the screenwriter shared that they used to meet in the evening in the nearby lanes. After some time, Salma's parents started pressuring her to choose between marrying Salim or someone of their choice. Hence, the couple decided to tie the knot. Salim and Salma got married in 1964, and a year later, they welcomed their first child, Salman Khan.

Salim Khan talks about financial constraints

Further, in the same conversation, Salim Khan talked about the financial constraints he faced while he was courting Salma Khan. He revealed that he took up extra jobs like cigarette ads and clothing ads to make ends meet as he needed money. Salim Khan was quoted as saying:

"Thodi si paiso ya job ki pareshaani toh hoti hi hai- ki kya hoga kaise hoga? Since I needed money, I accepted anything. I did cigarette ads, clothing ads, whatever came my way."
