'India's Got Latent's Samay Raina took a dig over the massive backlash he and his team have been getting for their joke over Deepika Padukone's mental health.
A recent video clip from Samay Raina’s show, India’s Got Latent, has gone viral. It features a female contestant trolling Bollywood actress, Deepika Padukone for her depression battle. The panel, which notably included a neurologist, has been criticised for trivialising mental health and clinical depression, a surprising turn of events given the professional background of the panellist.
Samay Raina took a screenshot of a Reddit notification about the controversy surrounding Deepika Padukone's mental health joke to his Instagram Stories a while back. Samay, in his typical nonchalant style asked everyone to give him hate and troll him in the video's comment section. He added that if the audience would do the same, he would at least be able to earn money via YouTube's ad revenue. In Samay's words:
"To everyone who is outraging on Twitter, one request: Could you please outrage in my YouTube comment section so I get some ad revenue from the traction, at least."
Samay sparked a heated debate with his recent actions. He not only shared the YouTube video's link to the story but also posted a tweet, urging people to direct their outrage to his YouTube comments section, rather than Twitter. This move, currently at X, has stirred up quite a reaction. His tweet can read as:
“Guys it’s not fair. You cannot outrage on twitter. Please outrage on my youtube comments section so there is some ad revenue at least.”
India’s Got Latent is not your typical online talent show. It's a quirky creation by the popular 'dark comedian', Samay Raina. While the show's unique appeal has garnered a cult following, it’s also the subject of a heated debate. Trolling and mockery, at times, seem to blur the line between humour and harmful stereotypes.
Bunty Banerjee cracked the joke in question. She made a cheeky remark about Deepika Padukone for being a mom to her newborn daughter, Dua. Referring to Deepika’s past struggles with clinical depression, Bunty quipped:
“Deepika Padukone became a mom recently, right? Great, now she’ll really understand what depression feels like… I am not trying to insult breakup-wala depression, actually – I am.”
