While some titled Animal as a ‘love letter to all the people, who called Kabir Singh a violent film’, some took a dig at critics, citing how Sandeep Reddy didn’t change the tone of his film despite being criticised for being too aggressive in his filmmaking.
Everyone is aware of the kind of filmmaker, Sandeep Reddy Vanga is, but what people don’t know about him is that he worked hard to reach wherever he is today. After years of struggle and waiting at directors’ offices to do all by himself, his success story is a true example for all beginner filmmakers nationwide. So, without further ado, let’s get straight into it!
The critically-acclaimed filmmaker, Sandeep Reddy Vanga was born on December 25, 1981, in Telangana. He was the younger son of his parents, Prabhakar Reddy and Sujatha, who had an elder son named Pranay Reddy Vanga. For this schooling, Sandeep went to Platinum Jubilee High School, Warangal, but he studied there till 8th standard. After which, he moved to Hyderabad in order to complete his 10th and 12th from the famous Siddartha High School.
The filmmaker pursued a degree in physiotherapy from the prestigious SDM College of Physiotherapy, Dharwad. However, after completing the degree, Sandeep Reddy Vanga realised that his interest lies in filmmaking. As a result, he went to Sydney and took admission to the International Film School.
During his time in the film school, Sandeep Reddy Vanga worked on a lot of projects that helped him understand the essence of filmmaking. Thus, when he returned to India, he tried to work as an assistant for an established director, so that he could take a close look at the craft of movie-making.
However, despite multiple rejections, when Sandeep Reddy Vanga went to famous filmmaker, Puri Jagannadh’s office to apply as an assistant director, the former was told to leave his resume and application at the watchman’s office by one of Puri’s managers. After facing such rejections from a series of filmmakers, Sandeep Reddy Vanga finally got the chance to work as an assistant director with Kranthi Madhav in the film, Malli Malli Idi Rani Roju. Once, in an interview with Deccan Chronicle, Sandeep Reddy opened up about his struggling days and said:
"When I went to meet Puri, I was told to leave my resume at the watchman’s, which I didn’t. I couldn’t meet Rajamouli either but he, too, had no vacancy."

Kabir Singh was one of the highest-grossing movies of 2019. However, the film’s director, Sandeep Reddy Vanga received a lot of criticism for a scene in which Arjun Reddy (Shahid Kapoor) slapped 'Preeti Sikka' (Kiara Advani). Soon after the film's blockbuster success, Sandeep sat down in a conversation with Anupama Chopra on Film Companion, in which he said something in his defense that irked the netizens even more. The filmmaker had said:
"When you are deeply in love and deeply connected to a woman (and vice versa), if you don’t have the liberty of slapping each other, then I don’t see anything there. She slapped him without a reason, at least Kabir had a reason to slap her. If you can’t slap, if you can’t touch your woman wherever you want, if you can’t kiss, I don’t see emotion there."
In the same interview, when Anupama Chopra had asked Sandeep Reddy Vanga whether Kabir Singh was the peak of aggression in his eyes, the filmmaker gave a savage response and stated that people should wait for his film, Animal. Well, there’s no denying the fact that Sandeep Reddy’s storytelling has indeed upset a lot of people, but how his films have performed at the box office also speaks a lot about the viewers.
