'Shamshera' director, Karan Malhotra revealed how Sanjay Dutt shot for the film while he was battling cancer.
It was on August 12, 2020, when Sanjay Dutt had announced taking a break from work for some medical treatment, leaving his fans concerned about his health. Later, film critic, Komal Nath had revealed that Sanjay was diagnosed with lung cancer. However, after a long treatment, Sanjay was declared cancer-free in October 2020.
Sanjay Dutt’s life has always been a rollercoaster ride. His family has a history of cancer. Sanjay’s mother and veteran actress, Nargis Dutt had succumbed to pancreatic cancer in 1981, and later, his first wife, Richa Sharma too had passed away due to a brain tumour. It was during the shoot of Shamshera when Sanjay was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer, and thus, he had filmed some portions when he was declared cancer-free.

In an interview with Hindustan Times, Shamshera’s director, Karan Malhotra talked about Sanjay Dutt’s fight with cancer. Revealing how the cast and crew were shocked by the news of the actor's cancer, Karan said:
“The news that Sanjay sir had been diagnosed with cancer came to all of us like a huge shock. We had no idea about it. He was talking, behaving and working like nothing has happened. I guess that’s why he is where he is today, having conquered this too. Sanjay sir doesn’t let anything get the better of him. He is an inspiration on the sets for everyone.”
In the same interview, Karan mentioned that Sanjay Dutt continued the shoot and behaved as if nothing had happened. In his words:
“Having given so many years of his life to his craft, Sanjay sir leads from the front and his demeanour shows us all how to conduct ourselves on the set. He went about shooting Shamshera with the attitude that there is nothing he can’t conquer. He never mentioned what he was going through personally. He kept the mood on the set light.”

Heaping praises on Sanjay Dutt for battling and winning cancer like a superman, Karan continued:
“It is exemplary how he silently showed us that we too can face life's adversities with a smile on our faces. To me, Sanjay sir is a superman and there is no one like him. I’m indebted for his support towards Shamshera. He is a constant guide and a mentor to me.”
