Question:

My fiancée is based out of London and I will be moving there after our wedding. I have just completed my MBA and was looking forward to working but now my career has taken a backseat. My fiancée tells me that I don’t have to work but I really want to work because I cannot imagine sitting idle at home the whole day. What should I do?

Answer:

Compromise is one thing, being forced into situations you don’t want to be in is another. Your husband should not be forcing you into something you don’t want to do. If you have nurtured career plans let him know that you are a career oriented person and you believe that working after marriage is not that bad after all. He should support your career plans post marriage and let you take professional decisions. Anyway you will need to undertake a long and tedious procedure for a career abroad. It will only help if you have a helpful husband who will help you work on your career goals and bag the job you have dreamt of, after you start your new life together. However you will have to manage both home and work without compromising on either. Also work permit restrictions exist for a number of visas. So you need to ensure that you weigh your options of a career abroad even before you get married as it will depend on the visa you secure. Visit a career counselor to check your options and find out how you can request work authorization to cover employment. Most importantly don’t let these issues dominate and ruin your marriage.
