Shah Rukh Khan recalls struggle faced by his cricket team, Kolkata Knight Riders initially, and revealed how he multi-tasked as the twelfth member of the team.
Shah Rukh Khan has been reigning spotlight for his leadership skills displayed at the recent matches of his cricket team, Kolkata Knight Riders, during the ongoing Indian Premiere League 2024. From cheering his players at the stands to giving them the much-needed morale from behind in the dressing room, SRK has proven that he isn’t just the owner of a cricket team, but very much a team member himself.
In a recent interaction with Star Sports, Shah Rukh Khan recalled the struggles his IPL franchise, Kolkata Knight Riders faced during its initial years. Talking about those past years, SRK remarked that they were quite challenging, when he acted as the twelfth man among his playing 11 of the team. He mentioned serving water to the players, handing them towels and even learning how to field during the match. In his words:
“The first five-six years were very challenging. I am not a cricketer…But I was the 12th man in KKR. As the 12th man, how to go field, serve the water, give the towel, and be able to explain that it is ok, give it time. Everything should be allowed to breathe.”

For the unversed, SRK’s IPL team, KKR is based out of Kolkata and its home ground has been the iconic Eden Gardens. The team has played a number of matches on this particular pitch and has even won a lot of seasons. Speaking about the sanctity of the ground, Shah Rukh revealed how there is a particular spot over there, where he feels like home, just like his Mumbai residence, Mannat. He shared:
“There’s no nervousness… In Eden Gardens, there is a left-side corner that is mine. I feel more than at home, more at family here.”
In another segment of the same interview, Shah Rukh Khan talked about gracing most of KKR’s matches during the current season of IPL 2024. While the world is awaiting the actor to comeback to the silver screen, the actor remarked how he is taking a bit of rest, after delivering three back-to-back releases. Moreover, he mentioned having promised his team to attend the matches of KKR, before he starts off with his next film. He expressed:
“I told the whole team ki, main matches ko aaunga. Fortunately, meri shooting ab August main hain, ya July… we plan in June, to June se shuru hojayegi. So, I am absolutely free to come to all the matches. Main khushi se aata hoon.”

Back on April 17, 2024, Shah Rukh Khan graced Eden Gardens, as his team, Kolkata Knight Riders played a match against Rajasthan Royals. Unfortunately, the former lost the match at the very last minute, despite putting their best efforts. However, what grabbed attention was the moment when SRK was seen getting teary eyed on witnessing the lost match.
