Shakti Kapoor recently reflected on his wife, Shivangi Kolhapure, sacrificing her acting career to marry the former, despite her family's opposition.
Shakti Kapoor, born Sunil Kapoor, is an Indian actor who has featured in over 700 films. Known for his antagonist and comic roles, Shakti has teamed up in comic or villainous teams with actors, Asrani and Kader Khan in more than 100 films. Sunil Dutt was the first to cast the actor in a negative role in Sanjay Dutt's debut film, Rocky. For the unversed, Sunil Dutt was the one to rename the actor's name from Sunil to Shakti as he felt the name would be more fitting for his stint.
Shakti Kapoor and Shivangi Kolhapure have been happily married for forty-three years. However, the beginning of the couple's union was not as smooth. Talking about their proposal and his ask of Shivangi, the Raja Babu actor, Shakti Kapoor opened up about how his wife left a promising acting and singing career to marry him. In a conversation with Timeout With Ankit, YouTube channel, Shakti also revealed how the former actress' family was strongly opposed to her marrying the actor. He was quoted saying:
"I met her. She was a child artiste, and I was playing an older character in the film. She is 12 years younger than me. We met, fell in love, and I thought to myself, 'Where will I find such a homely and beautiful girl?' One day, I told her that my work was getting disturbed, and I needed to focus. She got very angry."
In the same conversation, Shakti Kapoor recounted how he eventually proposed to Shivangi. He shared that he apologised and begged her to marry her. He revealed that he wanted Shivangi to be a housewife. Soon after, they got married in court. He was quoted saying:
"I went to her and begged her. I apologised and told her I wanted to marry her. I also said that I wanted her to be a housewife. We had a court marriage. After that, everyone accepted our union. She gave up her singing career and everything else for me. To this day, I fold my hands and thank her for that."
Shivangi Kolhapure belonged to a distinguished Marathi family. She is the sister of the iconic actress-singer, Padmini Kolhapure, and her relatives include the late legendary singer, Lata Mangeshkar. Shakti, on the other hand, came from a Punjabi family.
Their differing cultural backgrounds became a point of contention, and their families strongly opposed their relationship. However, in 1982, the couple eloped. The family reconciled after the couple welcomed their first child, Siddhant Kapoor. In 1887, the couple welcomed their second child, Shraddha Kapoor, who has since become one of Bollywood’s leading actors.
