Shekhar Suman shares anecdotes about a rare interview he conducted of Parveen Babi and rubbished rumours about the actress being mentally unstable.
Parveen Babi was one of the most iconic actresses back in the ‘70s and ‘80s decade of Hindi cinema. One of the highest-paid divas of her time, she impressed everyone with her modern fashion choices, glamorous roles and stunning personality. However, by 1983, Parveen disappeared from the realm of the silver screen and led to many speculations arising about her whereabouts. At one point in time, Parveen was tagged as being mentally unstable by many from the film fraternity, which led her to lose out on a few projects. She passed away in 2005.
In a recent interaction with Siddharth Kannan, Shekhar Suman talked about a special interview he took of Parveen Babi, at a time when a majority of people from the film industry tagged her as mentally unstable. The filmmaker remarked that such statements about the actress were blatant lies, as she was quite candid and warm in her disposition. Expressing his views on it, Shekhar said:
“Everything they used to say about her, it was all lies. ‘Woh paagal ho chuki hain, ajeeb sa behave karti hain. She was normal.”

Talking about his interview, Shekhar then revealed that it was Parveen Babi herself who called him up and scheduled it. However, at the last minute, she requested him to come to her residence and take the interview, since she couldn’t make it to his studio. Moreover, Shekhar stated that the interview at one point became slightly uncomfortable, since Parveen revealed some shocking yet unverified claims about various actors from the industry. However, he had to edit them out at the end. In his words:
“One day, I got a call, Shekhar, this is Parveen Babi. You’re so good, dear. Can I be on your show? Midway through the interview, she started saying some things that made me uncomfortable. She started saying things that I didn’t want to hear about certain people. I didn’t stop her, but I edited them out later, because there was no proof for what she was saying, and it wouldn’t have been right to believe a one-sided narrative.”
In the concluding segment of the interview, Shekhar Suman addressed Parveen Babi’s dislike over Amitabh Bachchan being hailed as the star of the millennium back in the days. Well, the diva didn’t find Big B worthy enough for such a title, since she considered him to be not so good-looking. Shekhar Suman cited the possible reasons for such a claim made by Parveen Babi and said:
“That’s what she said, but I didn’t try to ask her why she felt that way. She must’ve had her reasons.”

During her lifetime, Parveen Babi had worked with Amitabh Bachchan in a number of films. While many will believe that the two artists shared a special equation with one another, however, it was far from that. It was once reported that the duo were in a serious affair, but Amitabh distanced himself after the news leaked, making Parveen furious. In one of her shocking interviews, Parveen had made a startling claim about him, expressing how the latter kidnapped him once in a unknown island and placed a transmitter under her ear through operation.
