Shreya Ghoshal's Dig At Alia Bhatt's Rendition Of 'Samjhawan': 'Only To Get Cash Registers Ringing'

Throwback to the time when Shreya Ghoshal took a dig at Alia Bhatt lending her voice for the iconic song, 'Samjhawan', that was originally sung by the former.

Shreya Ghoshal is the ultimate queen of melodies in the entertainment industry, and there is no second thoughts to it. Right from the tender age of age of four, she started getting trained in classical music, and it was by the age of sixteen, that she got her massive break in playback singing with Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film, Devdas. Fast forward to now, Shreya has delivered countless songs across multiple regional languages, and has even been a recipient of numerous prestigious awards, both at the national and international levels.

Back in 2017, Shreya Ghoshal melted the hearts of a zillion audiophiles with her soulful song, Samjhawan, from the film, Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhaniya. For the unversed, the movie featured Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan and Sidharth Shukla in pivotal roles. The song became popularised quickly and was even hailed as a love anthem by many. Shortly afterwards, the makers of the film released an unplugged version of the same song, which was sung by Alia Bhatt herself. However, as compared to the original score by Shreya, it wasn’t able to fetch good reviews.

Later, during a press event for the promotions of the film, Shreya Ghoshal had shared her opinion on Alia Bhatt singing another rendition of her song. She reacted that actors often do such things in order to increase the hype for the film at the time of promotions. She wittily remarked that it was just a measure to strengthen the revenue for the film. Further, Shreya took a slight dig at Alia rending her voice and remarked that at the end of the day, the original credits of the song still would remain with the former and her co-singer, Arijit Singh, and in fact, audiences too, will always associate the song with the names of the original artists who sung it. She said:

“I understand that people do it for promotion. It doesn’t hamper me. Maybe it’s only to get the cash registers ringing. But when someone thinks of the song, the first names to crop up would be Shreya and Arijit. Like the producer, director and the actors, the audience too is aware of the fact that Alia rendered her vocals for the promotion of the film.”

In the same conversation, Shreya Ghoshal addressed the matter of many new singers in the music fraternity, who try to sound like her while singing. The talented artist claimed that she doesn’t pick up any bone with the matter, and is instead more than happy for them, if they end up making good music. Moreover, Shreya added that she has many times personally congratulated new artists for their performances. In her words:

“That’s fine as long as we are making good music. I have always given my heartfelt encouragement to new artists. At times, if I hear a song and if I have access to the artiste, I pick up my phone and make it a point to appreciate him or her. Sunidhi Chauhan and I have done that quite a few times. I am fine with people taking inspiration from me as long as eventually they find their own voice.”

Previously, in an interaction with MoneyControl, Shreya Ghoshal retrospected about her massively successful career in the music industry, for more than two decades now. She revealed that looking back over her experiences, she realises how much has voice has evolved with age. Shreya added that she was merely a girl when she started her playback journey, and by now, she has matured well enough. She credited the blessings of her listeners, seniors and colleagues, which helped her climb this far in the ladder of fame.

Shreya Ghoshal once clearly shared her disagreement over her songs getting recreated

In an earlier interview with IANS, Shreya Ghoshal opened up about the new trend of old songs getting recreated with newer versions. Talking about it, the singer remarked that she doesn’t want any of her songs to get recreated any point in time, as she has precious memories associated with each one of them. In her words:

“I don’t want any of my songs to be recreated, none of my songs. Even if it is asked to me to recreate, I would probably say no. There are so many of my songs which I have very strong memories with. Those are sentimental.”
