According to a report, India is ranked third on the list of countries with the most toxic work culture after China and South Korea. Amidst so many cases of extremely toxic office culture in India, there's a case from China that is proving why it leads the list of most toxic countries in terms of work-life balance. According to an Economic Times report, a China-based company named Shandong Shuntian Chemical Group has tasted global fame overnight.

Unfortunately, the company is trending all over social media due to an extremely negative allegation. Well, it is not what the company aimed for when they released a new employee policy. Shuntian Chemical Group's chairman, Yue Qingqu, is receiving a lot of backlash on the internet regarding its company's policies. Things have gone completely upside down for the businessman, and even the Chinese government have intervened in the situation.

For the unversed, Shandong Shuntian Chemical Group, a firm based in China's Shandong province, issued a directive warning for its employees regarding personal lives. The Shandong Shuntian group has warned over 1,200 employees who remain unmarried or divorced beyond September 2025 could be on the list of potential terminations. As per the company's notice, employees aged 28 to 58 who are still unmarried or divorced will be on top of the company's firing list. Not only this, employees who failed to find a partner and get married by March have been directed to submit a self-criticism letter by March 2025.

As soon as the policies made their way on the internet, people couldn't believe it was real and started bashing Shandong Shuntian Chemical Group and its owner, Yue Qingqu. A few lines from the policy letter can be read as "If you cannot get married and establish a family by the third quarter, the company will terminate your labour contract." Amidst all the backlash and buzz around their employee policies, Shandong Shuntian Chemical Group have released a statement in response to it and revealed the primary reason behind such policies.

According to a report in the South China Morning Post, Shandong Shuntian Chemical Group explained in their official statement that they respect the Chinese government's call to improve the country's marriage rate. The company also added that people should listen to their parents and work on finding a partner and getting married. The company policy has been framed as a moral and ethical obligation rather than a workplace rule. As of now, reports are rife that the company was forced to make some changes in its policies. An excerpt from Shandong Shuntian's official statement could be read as:

"Not responding to the government's call to improve the marriage rate is disloyal. Not listening to your parents is not filial. Letting yourself be single is not benevolent. Failing your colleagues' expectations is unjust."
