Having a great honeymoon is very important, because as the old saying goes “morning shows the day”. So choosing the right location for your honeymoon is just as important as choosing the right man to marry.

Iceland is one of the best places in the world to go for a honeymoon. I can hear you thinking, “Go to Iceland for a honeymoon? The country with the volcanoes? Pull the other one, it has bells on.” Hear me out here. Iceland may be off the beaten track, but it is definitely worth a visit.

Iceland is a beautiful country whose stark contrasts cannot fail to enthral you. Another plus point in Iceland’s favour as a honeymoon destination is the fact that it is an uncrowded and sparse country, which will allow you and your husband to discover each other and set the boundaries for your relationship.

Iceland’s Credentials
Did you know that Iceland was named by Lonely Planet as one of the Top 10 Value Destinations for 2010? The recent widening fiscal deficit of Iceland which caused such turmoil in international markets is a boon in disguise for visitors to the country, for it means that now the Icelander currency, krona, is cheaper than ever.

Did you also know that Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland, was named by CNN in their Top 10 Places to Spend Christmas list? USA Today Travel named Iceland as a top travel destination for 2011 and Lonely Planet named Iceland’s Westfjords region as one of the Top 10 Regions in its Best of Travel 2011 guide.

Natural Beauty
With all these accolades, need I say more about Iceland’s numerous attractions? Apart from the incredible natural phenomena (everyone should see the Aurora Borealis reflected in the cool still waters of one of Iceland’s many fjords at least once in their life time), Iceland offers plenty of attractions for those who are into adventure sports like white water rafting and riding down icy mountain slopes on snow scooters. When it comes to nightlife, the capital city of Reykjavik is legendary for its energy and trendy venues. Do not forget to be pampered at one of the city’s natural spas when you visit.

But probably the best thing about Iceland is its stark natural beauty. Must visit sights within driving distance from Reykjavik  include Deildartunguhver, the largest hot spring in Europe; the beautiful Hraunfossar ‘lava waterfalls’ and glacier Langjökull.

Waterfalls, Volcanoes and Beaches
Unique attractions of Iceland inclde the Seljalandsfoss waterfall and Skógafoss waterfall. Drop in the Skógar folk museum and walk on the spectacular black volcanic sand beach of Vík.

You should also spend a night at Snæfellsjökull National Park, a perfect location for nature lovers with amazing bird life, lush valleys and lava fields. The glacier is believed by many to be one of Earth’s seven major energy centres, and it was the backdrop to Jules Verne’s Journey to the Centre of the Earth. Snæfellsnes is great for horse riding tours and romantic walks on the beach.

A fact that will doubtless attract the value-conscious Indian traveller is that you do not need to worry about over spending while visiting Iceland, thanks to the favourable exchange rate.
