SN Subrahmanyan is the chairman of Larsen & Toubro, one of India's largest multinational conglomerates engaged in EPC projects. The renowned conglomerate is receiving a lot of criticism on social media after its chairman and managing director, SN Subrahmanyan, suggested that employees should work 90 hours a week. During an interaction with the employees, Subrahmanyan shared that he regrets he cannot make his employees work even on Sundays.
The L&T chairman, SN Subrahmanyan revealed that he works even on Sundays and told the employees to come to the office and work on Sundays like him because how long can they stare at their wives? The comment shocked netizens to the core, and people started addressing the poor condition of work-life balance in India all over again. Coming to Subrahmanyan's exact words, it goes like this:
"I regret I am not able to make you work on Sundays, to be honest. If I can make you work on Sundays, I will be more happy, because I work on Sundays also. What do you do sitting at home? How long can you stare at your wife? How long can the wives stare at their husbands? Get to the office and start working."
Several renowned personalities like Deepika Padukone, Harsh Goenka, Jwala Gutta, and many more lashed out at SN Subrahmanyan for his statement. However, things went downhill for L&T when a report by The New Express revealed that SN Subrahmanyan took home an annual income of Rs. 51 crore in 2023-24.
As per the report, SN Subrahmanyan's salary is 534.57 times higher than the median salary of the employees of L&T. Not only this, L&T even came out in support of their chairman and released a statement defending his remarks but didn't put any control on the damage that keeps on rising.
According to multiple reports, SN Subrahmanyan is married to a woman named Meena, and they have two sons, Suraj and Sujay. As per the official website of L&T, Meena Subrahmanyan is a gold medallist in Economics. After their marriage, Meena took the mantle of family responsibilities. Not only this, she took care of their children's education and weddings because Subrahmanyam was deeply equipped with L&T. While Subrahmanyan dedicated his life to work, due to which he had created a strong financial support for his family, Meena is the one who took care of all the family responsibilities, and the couple is leading a happy married life.
SN Subrahmanyan was born in Chennai into a well-to-do family, as his father, SS Narayanan, used to work as a general manager at the Indian Railways. Subrahmanyan completed his education from Chennai's Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School. To attain a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, he took admission to Kurukshetra's Regional Engineering College. In the following years, he pursued an MBA degree from Pune's Symbiosis Institute of Business Management and Executive Management Programme from the London Business School.
After completing his studies, SN Subrahmanyan joined the ECC division of L&T in 1984 and started collaborating with the then-top management of the company, Cheyur Ramaswamy Ramakrishnan, A Ramakrishna, and K V Rangaswami. L&T operates in a series of different sectors, including heavy industry, engineering, manufacturing, information technology, financial services, industrial technology, and many more. The company was founded by Danish engineers, Henning Holck-Larsen and Soren Kristian Toubro in 1983 in Bombay.
After joining L&T in 1984, in the following years, SN Subrahmanyan worked tremendously hard to make the company grow. As a result, in July 2011, Subrahmanyan was appointed as the full-time director of the L&T board. It was a significant milestone in his professional journey, and he repaid top management's faith in his abilities with his work in the following years. Fast forward to 2025, and SN Subrahmanyan is the chairman and managing director of L&T. He is committed to taking the company to further heights and earning a deserved salary in crores.
