Sonali Bendre is one of the best actresses from the 90s, who has primarily worked in the Hindi, Telugu and Tamil film industries. She stepped into the world of glitz and glamour in 1994 with film, Aag, and then went on to star in some of the most popular films of Bollywood. However, she took a hiatus from the film industry and is now often seen on reality TV shows as a judge.

When Sonali Bendre recalled being ‘skinny-shamed’

The popular Bollywood actress, Sonali Bendre, once talked about the beauty standards prevalent during the 90s. In an interview with Bollywood Bubble, she said that being skinny was not a requirement for women to be considered beautiful during that era. In fact, being voluptuous was considered the standard of beauty back then. The actress also revealed that she was skinny-shamed during that time. She said:

“Being skinny was definitely not the standard of beauty back in the 90s, so voluptuousness was the standard of beauty. I was told you were just not a woman enough if you were not voluptuous, you know, which it shouldn’t be. I do agree body shaming should not have any part in our society and especially little girls and the kind of ideas they are growing up with and the crazy dieting people are doing. People are forgetting that it is not holistic.”

When Sonali Bendre shared her cancer journey

In the same interview, the 90s diva, Sonali Bendre opened up about her cancer journey and shared that she was scared of her scars and bald head post-diagnosis. For the unversed, the 48-year-old actress was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer in 2018, and she underwent treatment for the same in the USA. After successfully overcoming breast cancer, Sonali has been actively advocating for women to get themselves tested for the disease. She said:

“I remember coming back and speaking to Anayata when she called up and I said ‘I want to do this shoot and I want to do it with this scar showing because I’m scared to show it. That was the scary part as the bloated face the scar and the baldness and especially when the hair just starts coming, it’s just the most ugly sight on the top of your head. But I did that and I said that the moment you’re scared of something and you’re feeling that ‘no, how can I do this’, I need to go out and do it and you just kill it right there or just crush it then. That was one way of looking at it.”

Sonali Bendre further shared that her social media post about her cancer diagnosis had a positive impact on the testing rates. She mentioned that her husband, Goldie Behl sent her a photo of a newspaper headline which stated that after she spoke about her diagnosis, many people went for testing. Sonali also added that at present, people discuss cancer more openly than they did four years ago. She accepts that it is important to have that conversation and is glad that she could contribute to it.
