In a recent interview, Sonali Bendre opened up about her dating rumours with her contemporaries back in the '90s and revealed the truth.
Sonali Bendre is currently on a promotional spree for her web series, The Broken News 2, in which she will reprise her role as a credible journalist, Amina. The actress has previously acted in some iconic films, including Diljale, Hum Saath Saath Hai, Naaraaz, and Duplicate. In her personal life, Sonali is married to filmmaker, Goldie Behl. However, back in the day, the actress fell prey to yellow journalism and made many headlines for her dating rumours with her co-stars.
In an interview with News18 Showsha, Sonali Bendre revealed that she has often been linked up with her male contemporaries in the '90s and made headlines for the same back then. Elaborating on it, the actress shared that gossipmongers would weave stories about her affairs and fights with her contemporaries, but most of the time, the reports were not even true. She said:
“Gossips and newsmakers jumping to conclusions – be it about who you’re seeing or the affairs you’re having or even the fights you’re having with your co-stars – come under the gamut of ‘where did that come from?’ And most of the time, such things that were written about me weren’t true at all.”

Speaking along the same lines, Sonali added that while it’s a prevalent trend even today, earlier producers used to intentionally spread such rumours to the media in order to increase the buzz surrounding their films. She also mentioned that actors are now asked to clear the air around their dating buzz, but back then, they were never asked about it. Sonali added:
“These days, actors are at least asked if they would want link-up rumours with their co-stars to be floated around. During my time, we weren’t even asked and those gossips would just be out there to promote the film and the actors had no choice.”
For the unversed, Sonali Bendre was once linked to Suniel Shetty in the ’90s. The Hum Saath Saath Hain actress addressed her dating rumours and shared that linking two co-stars was a trend back then so that the lead pair stayed in the news. However, Sonali found this gimmick completely strange and never fell for it. She said:
“There was a motive to link the lead pair up just to be in news. Itne shiddat ke saath yeh karte the ki I think they (such gimmicks) may have worked. But I found these things to be really strange.”

Sonali also mentioned that though perception building is important in show business, she was asked to create a narrative about her coming from a financially strong background. Speaking about the same, the actress shared that she never wanted to lie about herself, but her colleagues often had to manufacture a false narrative. She added:
“Today, curating a rags to riches story for an actor is working. At my time, they told me to not give out the fact that I came from a middle-class family. We were supposed to say that we come from a rich background. But I’ve always maintained since the very beginning that I belong to a middle-class family because I thought it was obvious. I wasn’t comfortable lying but I know that a lot of colleagues did do that. But what happens is that when you give out fake stories, you get caught up in them. And the moment there’s a lie, people go about finding the truth.”
