When Sonam Kapoor was actively working in Bollywood, she experimented with her looks for different events and interviews. However, she revealed that she didn't buy them all. The actress said that she found borrowing outfits was far more practical and began borrowing clothes from designers. The Neerja actress added that borrowing clothes was globally popular then but not in India. She was quoted as saying:
"I realised people didn't often borrow clothes, so I started borrowing them. It didn't make sense to buy everything all the time. I did buy a lot, but borrowing was more practical."

There are often inspirations behind fashion and different looks. However, Sonam always focused on representing her authentic self through her fashion. Sonam considered designers to be 'stars' whom she admired a lot. The Aisha actress shared that she just wanted to wear whatever she liked from different designers that she knew. In her words:
"It was just me being myself, influenced by the education I got from my mom and my passion for fashion."
There has often been a discussion on the popularity of influencers online. Sonam believes that actors and famous people are also influencers. Due to this reason, they become brand ambassadors and set new trends. So, the actress hopes she is seen as an influencer who can set trends and inspire others. In her words:
"I don't understand why anyone would be offended by being called an influencer. I hope I'm seen as one. I hope I set trends and inspire people in positive ways, in things I believe in and find fun. I like being an influencer. I've worked very hard to be an actor, to be someone who loves my job, and to have a platform. As a woman in India, having this platform is a significant achievement, and I'm proud of it."

Sonam has inspired a new generation of actresses to a certain extent.
