The man who was the inspiration behind Aamir Khan's film, '3 Idiots', Sonam Wangchuk shares how differently he was reflected through the film.
Aamir Khan’s iconic hit film, 3 Idiots continues to remain one of the most popular movie of all times. With so many years having gone by, the film hasn’t lost even a bit of its reverence in the hearts of the fans, who would watch it any time even now. For the unversed, the movie was directed by Rajkumar Hirani and featured R Madhavan, Sharma Joshi, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Boman Irani in pivotal roles, apart from Aamir Khan as the protagonist. Interestingly, the film was inspired from the real life of education reformist and scientist, Sonam Wangchuk.
While the movie talked a great deal about parental pressures prevalent in the education society of our country, it also, at length lauds education reformists like Sonam Wangchuk, who thought to change the medium of study into something more in-depth and fun based. In the film, 3 Idiots, a similar character based on Sonam was enacted by Aamir Khan, who was given the name, ‘Rancho’. In a recent interaction with The Lallantop, the eminent educationist revealed whether he has watched the film and mentioned:
“Yes, I have watched the film. It was a nice film with a good message.”

While Aamir Khan’s character with the real name, ‘Phunsukh Wangdu’ in 3 Idiots was heavily inspired from the real life of Sonam Wangchuk, the latter has a very different take on it. Speaking along the same lines, the scientist mentioned that although the film gave a meaningful message to the audience, he somehow feels disconnected with the character represented, that was inspired from him. Revealing how he happens to me more beautiful that the on-screen character, Sonam said:
“Main toh kya kisi aur ne kaha ki aap ye boliye ki film mein jo kirdar dikha rahi hai mein unse bahut zyaada khoobsurat hu. Mein kaise inse jodo khud ko.”
Previously, in an interview with the Hindustan Times, Sonam Wangchuk had opened up on the popular claims of the Rajkumar Hirani film, 3 Idiots being his biopic. The eminent scientist and education reformer clearly retorted how people quite easily mistake the film for his biopic, whereas it is just inspired from him and the facts aren’t real. Moreover, he claimed that people should treat the film as nothing more than a story for entertainment.

Apart from its gripping storyline and amazing performances delivered by each and every actor in the film, 3 Idiots also grabbed a lot of attention for Aamir Khan, who quite effortlessly essayed the role of an 18-year-old college going kid, while in reality he was actually 45. Talking about the same, Aamir, during one of his older media interactions revealed that for the longest time, he didn’t feel that he would fit well to play such a role. In his words:
“I shouldn`t have acted in `3 Idiots` as in no way do I look like an 18-year-old. The only reason I did the film was because it was about education. I was drawn towards stories about education ever since `Taare Zameen Par` and then `3 Idiots` happened. Cinema has the ability to reach out to people and more films upholding this cause should be made.”
