Talking about the role, Sophie added:
“If I hadn’t been a mother, I don’t know if I would have been able to bring the same energy that I did into it. It’s such a struggle being a single mother. Joan doesn’t go about it in the best way … but it is amazing to see her really fighting for her daughter."
At present, Sophie is a single mom who is managing her motherhood journey alone. The actress added that she understands where her on-screen character is coming from and how being a single mom is a task in itself.

There's a lot of shame that comes with being a single mom, as they are shamed for every single reason. If a single mom is working, she is shamed, and if she is not working, then she is held at fault. In Sophie's words:
"It’s also really important for kids to see just how hard parents work for them. There’s so much shame that comes with motherhood. You go to work, you’re shamed. If you don’t go to work, you’re shamed.”
In an interview with British Vogue, Sophie revealed that she was mom-shamed after her divorce from Joe. She revealed that during the shoot of her TV series, Joan, reports of her not being a good mother made rounds on the internet.
