While nowadays, getting paid a whopping Rs 1 crore for a film might not be unheard of, getting that big of a cheque was a huge deal back in the day, especially for the female actors in the biz. However, there was one female superstar who was a massive blockbuster machine not just in the Hindi film industry but the South film industry, as well and created waves across the nation after charging Rs 1 crore for a film.
Actress, Sridevi was the first female superstar of Indian cinema, and not that she remained at the top of her game for almost 50 years. She was a versatile queen, with her work spanning from Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu films to the Malayalam and Kannada film industries. During her run, the actress had been a part of nearly 300 films in her career. The yesteryear actress won hearts since her first appearance on the screen as an adult actor in the Tamil film, Moondru Mudichu and since had worked with several A-listed actors like Amitabh Bachchan, Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan and others. If reports are to be believed, she is the first Indian actress in Bollywood to charge Rs. 1 crore for her film.
It was reported that producer, Boney Kapoor was captivated by the legendary actress, Sridevi, the first time he saw her in a Tamil film. A few years later, he ended up signing the late actress for his superhit film, Mr. India, alongside Anil Kapoor. It is speculated that Boney and Sridevi fell for each other on the sets of the film. For the uninitiated, Boney Kapoor was at the time already married to Arjun Kapoor's mother, Mona Shourie Kapoor. Boney tied the knot with Mona in 1983. However, they got divorced in 1996, after which the producer married Sridevi, with whom he has two daughters, Khushi and Jhanvi Kapoor.
The legendary actress was born on August 13, 1963, in Meenampatti village in Tamil Nadu. The Indian actress made her acting debut as a child actress at the age of 4 with M.A. Thirumugam's mythological Tamil film, Thunaivan. The actress was born Shree Amma Yanger Ayyapan but later changed her name to Sridevi. According to a national poll conducted by CNN-IBN in 2013, she was voted 'India's Greatest Actress in 100 Years'.
The actress gave us some of her most power-packed performances with her role as 'Anju Pandyekar' and 'Manju Prajapati' in the action-comedy film, Chaalbaaz. She also made us groove to her stellar dance moves in action sci-fi, Mr. India. Sridevi had us swooning with her role as 'Chandni Mathur' in Rishi Kapoor starrer, Chandni. However, Bollywood lost its Chand too soon as Sridevi passed away on February 24, 2018, at the age of 54. The actress was found dead of an accidental drowning in her guest room at the Jumeirah Emirates Towers Hotel in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
