Sanjay Dutt and the timeless beauty, Rekha had come together for the movie, Zameen Aasman (1984). Soon after the shooting had started, faint rumours were rife in the air about their alarmingly growing proximity on the film sets. They had reportedly started spending a lot of time together. Sanjay Dutt's father, Sunil Dutt, was well aware of whatever was going between them and was furious. He had advised Sanju to stay away from such things at that point of his career. However, Sanjay Dutt had not paid heed to his father’s words.

On August 22, 2020, Sanjay Dutt was spotted celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi with his beautiful wife, Maanayata. Sanju baba had posted a picture from the celebrations and had written in the caption, "The celebrations aren't as huge as they used to be every year but the faith in Bappa remains the same. I wish that this auspicious festival removes all the obstacles from our lives and bless us all with health and happiness. Ganpati Bappa Morya." As we all know, Sanjay Dutt has been diagnosed with lung cancer and the whole industry is sending him good wishes and praying for his speedy recovery. As per the reports pouring in, Sanju baba might soon leave for the US for his treatment. On August 18, 2020, Sanjay Dutt's wife, Maanayata had issued a statement regarding his health which had said, "To all of Sanju's fans and well-wishers, I can't begin to thank you for the love and warmth you have shown him all these years. Sanju has been through many ups and downs in his life, but what has kept him going through every tough phase has always been your adulation and support. And for this, we will always be grateful. We are now being tested through yet another challenge, and I know, the same love and warmth will see him through this time as well."
She had further given details about Sanju's preliminary treatment and had requested everyone to not speculate the stage of his illness. She had said "For those asking, Sanju will complete his preliminary treatment in Mumbai. We will formulate further plans of travel depending on how and when the covid situation eases. As of now, Sanju is in the best hands of our esteemed doctors at Kokilaben hospital. I request everyone, with my folded hands, to stop speculating the stage of his illness and let the doctors continue to do their work. We will update you all regularly with his progress."
