Sunil Dutt Had Refused To Pull Out Wife, Nargis Dutt From Life Support After She Slipped Into Coma

Throwback to a time when Sunil Dutt showcased his outpouring love for his wife, Nargis at a time when the latter battled for her life against cancer!

Sunil Dutt and his darling wife, Nargis were known to have been one of the most evergreen couples of the decade. The duo fell in love while doing their film, Mother India together and ended up tying the knot in 1958. They shared an amorous relationship and stood beside one another through thick and thin. However, their journey of togetherness was cut short when destiny planned for Nargis to leave the mortal planes on May 3, 1981. Here’s a small throwback anecdote from the time when Nargis battled for her life against cancer, and how her husband, Sunil Dutt stood like a strong pillar of strength all the time.

Sunil Dutt refused doctor’s advice to remove Nargis from life support when she slipped into coma

Nargis Dutt was all healthy and hearty and was successfully serving her political career as a member of the Rajya Sabha when she suddenly fell ill and it was reported that she suffered from jaundice. But having conducted various tests, it was analysed that in fact, she suffered from pancreatic cancer. Upon learning her condition, Sunil Dutt had wasted no time to take her to the US for treating her in a cancer speciality hospital, where unfortunately, her health deteriorated and she slipped into coma. After multiple attempts, when her doctors had given up on restoring her to life, they had suggested removing her from the life support system. However, the doting husband, Sunil, had simply refused to budge on the advice and never gave up on her.

Finally, after being in the same vegetative state of prolonged coma for about four months, Nargis had regained consciousness and was discharged from the hospital and thereafter, brought back to India. Sadly, within a few days, her health worsened again and she slipped to a coma once more, which gradually led to her death on May 3, 1981.

Sunil Dutt had saved Nargis from the fire accident on the sets

While their love story had met a tragic end, nevertheless, on the flip side, there have been quite a few fond memories from their love story that live on even today. For instance, it was actually a fire accident that had led to the duo falling in love with one another. Well, Sunil Dutt had a long-time crush on Nargis, but he could not express his feelings to her since he was not a celebrity like her back then. However, when a fire broke out on the sets of their film, Mother India, Sunil bravely jumped into the ring of fire and saved Nargis by getting severely injured himself. Such unconditional action melted Nargis’ heart and laid the foundation of their love story. Interestingly, it was Nargis who stood beside Sunil when he suffered injuries and had even nursed him to wellness.

Nargis had kept the gifts she received from Sunil as a collection, but never used them

In one of the other fond anecdotes from their happy life together, it was revealed how Sunil Dutt loved to shower his wife, Nargis with lots of gifts keeping in mind her choices. And so, it became a mandate that upon returning from his outdoor shoots, Sunil Dutt would bring home a saree for Nargis and gift it to her. Interestingly, Nargis never wore them and kept them as a part of her collection, since they were not to her liking. While this bit of information disheartened Sunil a bit, but later he appreciated Nargis for at least keeping them with her.

When Sanjay Dutt revealed taking his parents, Sunil and Nargis for granted

In their happy lifetime of togetherness, Sunil Dutt and Nargis were blessed with their son, Sanjay Dutt and their two daughters, Priya Dutt and Namrata Dutt. Of the three, it was Sanjay who followed in the footsteps of his parents and created a name for himself in the film industry. And in one of his earlier interviews, Sanjay Dutt had spoken about his past, where he was guilty of taking his parents for granted. Recalling how he realises the same now after loosing both of his parents, he mentioned:

“I think for any son or any child losing a parent is the worst thing. We forget them and think, 'arey nhi nhi papa mamma toh hai he', we take them for granted. But we should not do that. Spend as much as time you can with them, be with them. Cherish every moment with your parent. After losing them, I am saying this."
