When Nargis was diagnosed with cancer, she was taken to the US for treatment but nothing worked and she slipped into a coma. When Sunil Dutt was asked to remove her from life support, he refused.
Born to Diwan Raghunath Dutt and Kulwantidevi Dutt in 1929, Balraj Dutt, known as Sunil Dutt, experienced fame for the first time when he became the popular voice of the radio station, Radio Ceylon, where he was working before becoming an actor. In the early '50s, Sunil found his ticket to Bollywood when Ramesh Saigal offered him a role in Railway Platform and suggested his name change from Balraj Dutt to avoid name conflicts with veteran actor, Balraj Sahni. It was two years after his debut, in 1957, when Sunil catapulted to fame with the release of the film, Mother India, in which he was cast opposite his future wife, Nargis.

Sunil Dutt had a crush on Nargis for a long time and because he wasn't a celebrity back then, he hesitated in expressing his feelings for the preeminent actress. During the Mother India shoot, Nargis was so much distressed by her relationship with Raj Kapoor that she even contemplated suicide. When a fire scene went out of control on the sets and Nargis was stuck within the ring of fire, it was Sunil, who without a second thought, barged in to save her. Sunil had burns on his chest and face while Nargis had burns on her arms. If not for Sunil's swift action, Nargis would have lost her life. That was the beginning of a forever love journey of Sunil and Nargis, which was solemnised in 1958 with a secret wedding.
Sunil Dutt and Nargis' picture-perfect married life had taken a tragic turn in 1980 when after her health deteriorated with jaundice, she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Sunil had taken Nargis to a cancer care speciality hospital in the US but despite the care and best treatment, she went into an indefinite coma. After which, the doctors had suggested turning off her ventilator but Sunil refused to give up on Nargis. For four months, Nargis was in a vegetative state and had finally regained consciousness, was discharged from the hospital and returned to Mumbai in 1981. Unfortunately, Nargis had taken her last breath on May 3, 1981.
Madly in love with Nargis, Sunil Dutt always showered her with love and gifts, respecting her choices. Sunil knew how much Nargis loved sarees, so whenever he used to go out for shooting, he would bring a gift for her, reportedly. But eventually, he noticed that Nargis never wore any of the sarees he had gifted her. Nevertheless, Nargis appreciated his gestures and gifts but told Sunil that the reason why she never wore those sarees was that she didn't like them. However, she kept all the sarees in her collection. Initially, Sunil was heartbroken knowing that Nargis didn't like his gifts but later, laughed thinking that she kept them in her collection.

Though it has been decades since Sunil Dutt and Nargis became husband and wife, making their relationship official, but even today, any picture of them in one frame makes their fans' hearts flutter. To mark Sunil's 16th death anniversary on May 25, 2021, social media is flooded with precious memories of the actor. Scrolling through social media, we found a picture of Sunil and Nargis, posing with their Filmfare trophies. While Sunil's suited-booted all-black look was suave, Nargis' elegance won our hearts as she had worn a shimmery golden coloured saree, paired with choker and earrings.
Even Sunil Dutt and Nargis' son, Sanjay Dutt never leaves a chance to express how much he misses the presence of his parents in his life. On Nargis' 40th death anniversary on May 3, 2021, Sanjay had posted a throwback childhood picture. In the picture, Sanjay was all smiles for the camera as his mother held him in her arms. Sanjay had captioned the post as "Not a day goes by when I don't miss you Ma!" To mark Sunil's 16th death anniversary, Sanjay posted a 'like father, like son' picture, in which they both sported suited-booted looks. Sanjay captioned his post as "A parent, an idol, a friend, a mentor - you were everything to me. Love you Dad, miss you."
