Sushmita Sen On Taking A Long Break From Acting, Reveals Getting Type-Casted Over And Over Again

Sushmita Sen opened up about why she chose to take a break from films post 2015, and revealed getting type-casted opportunities for the longest time.

Sushmita Sen, a.k.a the former Miss Universe is a true-blue diva by all means. She is known for her breathtaking beauty, charismatic personality and unparalleled acting chops. Apart from being a mainstream actress, it is with her bold choice and unapologetic opinions that she has inspired many. For instance, at the age of 25, she adopted her daughter, Renee and set an example for many by being a single mother back then. Thereafter, some years later, she adopted her daughter, Alisah, and completed her family. Since then, the diva has single-handedly raised her daughters, and has been enjoying a blissful life with them.

Sushmita Sen retrospects her decision to take a hiatus from acting

In a conversation with Sonal Kalra at the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit 2023, Sushmita Sen retrospected her successful film career and revealed the reason behind her decision to take a hiatus from acting post 2015. The diva mentioned how she was simply tired of doing the same kind of roles over and over again, and added how she didn’t like being type-casted for just a handful of roles. Adding how she wanted to learn and do more like a student, she mentioned:

“The reason I left films was because I was tired of doing the same 201 expression to 2010. That was all I had to do. There was one good song and so on. I was looking for more. As I was getting older, I was not happy with that. I wanted more, I wanted to be student again. I want them to teach me and tell me you suck at this job, let me teach you how it is really done.”

Sushmita reveals going through basic workshops for her comeback series, Arya

In the same conversation, Sushmita talked about her massively hit comeback project, Arya and revealed how during her preparation for the same, she needed to attend several workshops, just like a newbie into acting. Sharing how she loved the 21-day long learning experience, Sushmita revealed:

“That’s what Aarya did for me. I would have a 14-hour workshop, other actors would come and go and I would be the permanent fixture, just hungry to learn. I would go back home very late at night every day, for 21 days. And I loved it, loved that I was finally learning how to do my job.”

When Sushmita claimed that her Miss India win in 1993 was unexpected

In one of her earlier interactions with Bollywood Bubble, Sushmita Sen recalled her grand win at the Miss India pageant in 1993 and claimed that she never expected to win it in the first place. Moreover, she emphasised that it was only winning at the national level when she understood the giant responsibility and fame it brought along with such an achievement. Finally, she credited how the love of her parents and brother was the driving force and support at that time.

When Sushmita shared her painful battle with Addisons disease

In the same interview, Sushmita Sen had also spilt beans on one of the most tough battles of her life, when she was diagnosed with the auto-immune condition of Addisons disease in 2014. She mentioned how the prescribed heavy amounts of steroids for its remedy, and added how it ended up taking a toll on her career. She mentioned:

“That phase of my life was the one that shook me considerably because I’m someone like, ‘It’s okay, everything will be better tomorrow.’ But when someone tells you that you’re on steroid dependent for life and it has many side effects, you’re done and your career is done. The way you know your life to be is done because you cannot be out in public for very long. You don’t have a stress management system. The more stress you’ll take the more steroids you will have to take to accommodate for it. This shook me up.”
