Former Miss Universe, Sushmita Sen has been an inspiration for many. The diva rules millions of hearts, courtesy of her charming looks, exceptional acting mettle and down-to-earth nature. Apart from her professional recognition, Sushmita often grabs the headlines for her personal life choices. For the unversed, the 47-year-old diva was previously dating model and actor, Rohman Shawl. After the duo broke up, there was sudden news about Sushmita being in a relationship with the former chairman of the Indian Premiere League, Lalit Modi, when the latter dropped mushy romantic pictures with her. However, despite Lalit’s claims, Sushmita never admitted or acknowledged any of it. Nevertheless, the news, which broke out like wildfire attracted a lot of criticism for Sushmita, including her being tagged as a ‘gold-digger’.
In a recent interview with Barkha Dutt for Mojo Story, Sushmita recalled the time when people called her mean things like a ‘gold-digger’, when the whole fiasco of her personal life with entrepreneur, Lalit Modi broke out. While the diva had maintained her dignified stance till the end of it, and only gave a befitting response once by claiming herself to be a ‘diamond’ herself. And now, recalling how she dealt with it all back then, Sushmita exclaimed she found it all very amusing. In her words:
“The only reason that I put out that post was to laugh at it. I wasn’t that pained. It was just amusing because you call a woman a gold digger, and you are monetising that gold digger by writing stories on her.”

In the same interview, Sushmita mentioned how, over the years, people’s mentality about levying lewd criticisms against a woman never changed. Moreover, speaking about her own experience, she highlighted that witnessing it all, she only laughed her lungs out during the whole episode. She mentioned:
“What bothers me is that when good people keep quiet, the bad just thrives. I have seen that happen too many times. We think it’s not elegant to respond. Let elegance be damned. I just need people to know I am laughing my lungs out, and it just shows me that generations have changed, but people haven’t changed morally and ethically much.”
Back in July 2022, when Lalit Modi announced his relationship with Sushmita Sen on his social media handle, she became a victim of too much negativity and trolling. People were quick to tag her as a gold-digger for being in a relationship with someone as influential as Lalit. However, while she bared it all with her dignified silence, she once chose to clear her stance, and slam all such criticisms with a befitting response. Taking to her IG handle, Sushmita dropped a sexy picture of herself in an infinity pool. Along with it, she penned a powerful caption, and said that she has always preferred diamonds, and she has always dug deeper than gold.

“It's good that those comments came to me and I could define 'gold digger'. An insult is an insult when you receive it, which I don't. But there are certain things that are nobody's business."
