Sushmita Sen is a name that needs no introduction. The stunning diva made the nation proud after she won the coveted title of Miss Universe on May 21, 1994. Sushmita was just 19 when she achieved the biggest glory for her nation. And since then, she has been inspiring millions with her outlook on life.
On May 1, 2024, ace fashion designer, Ritu Kumar took to her IG handle and posted a throwback video of Sushmita Sen from her first photoshoot after she won the Miss Universe title. Since Sushmita’s photoshoot was scheduled to take place outside the historic monument, the clothes that were planned were not appropriate. The ace designer opened her store in the wee hours and created some mind-blowing pieces for the diva. Recalling the whole incident, Ritu penned:
“When she landed in Delhi after the tour I got a frantic call to come to the Taj Palace. On reaching I learned that the team had scheduled a shoot outside the Taj Mahal the next day but the clothes they got sent were shorts and t-shirts - too skimpy to be worn outside a mausoleum! So, at night we opened up the store and located a pink sari and quickly altered a blouse. We also got hold of some other key pieces and within hours we were ready for the shoot.”
After the shoot was over, Ritu was over the moon as she received a lot of praise for her hard work and dedication. The ace designer further penned how the police personnel applauded the team and wrote:
“The shoot turned out to be hectic and poor Sushmita even fainted at one point but the images were worth our toils. To date, I think of her in that pink sari wearing a crown and the UP Police personnel around us clapping with pride! These images were splashed all over the country’s leading publications with credits to us and, more importantly, to the weavers."

There is no doubt that Sushmita is one of the most stunning women and is an inspiration to millions. However, if you think that Sushmita’s beauty was the only reason why she received the prestigious award, then maybe you haven’t heard the answers she gave to the questions asked in the final round of the competition. Well, her best answer, which had made the headlines in a lot of newspapers and magazines back at that time, was to the question, “What is the essence of being a woman?” To which, the 19-year-old had replied:
“Being a woman is the gift of God. The origin of a child is its mother who is a woman. The women share the love with men and teach them what love, caring and sharing are all about.”
Sushmita Sen had a humble beginning, and when a Miss India agent asked her to participate in the pageant, she brushed off his suggestion. In an interview with Mid-Day, Sushmita revealed how her father, Shubeer Sen, was left upset with her decision to enter the pageant. Sushmita shared that her father was then an Indian Army officer and wanted her to be an IAS officer. However, he didn't like that Sushmita wanted to enter Miss India.
In the same interview, Sushmita further shared that her father didn't like the fact that she didn't complete her graduation. She shared that he always wanted her to have a 'degree'. Sushmita also shared that she philosophically told her father she would 'graduate in life.' And recently she got an honourary doctorate, which her father had received on her behalf from Mr Narayana Murthy.
Sushmita Sen is the pride of every Indian, and with time, her fanbase has only multiplied to many folds.
