Few stories resonate with ambition, resilience, and reinvention as powerfully as the journey of the Ambanis. What began in a one-room chawl in Mumbai’s Kabootar Khana has transformed into an empire that defines India’s corporate strength. Today, the very name, Ambani, is synonymous with opulence and influence. Still, the family’s roots remain a testament to fortitude and perseverance. At the heart of it all lies the extraordinary vision of Dhirubhai Ambani, the man who built Reliance Industries from the ground up.

Dhirubhai Ambani: A maverick with a mission

Dhirubhai Ambani’s early life in Chorwad, Gujrat, was anything but privileged. As the son of a school teacher, his childhood was especially marked by financial constraints. Despite all these, even as a young boy, Dhirubhai demonstrated a sharp business acumen. What many might know about the OG Ambani’s childhood, during his school days, rather than regularly attending school with his peers, Dhirubhai used to observe street vendors to seek ways to make money, from selling fried snacks to pilgrims to other small ventures.

After working as a petrol attendant in Aden, he returned to India in 1959 with just a few thousand rupees, which was a humble start for a man with boundless dreams. Talking about the same, his son, Anil Ambani once recalled in an old interview with Simi Garewal:

“In 1959, my father had just returned from Aden. he had made a few thousand which is equal to a few lakhs today. We were a family of six. My grandmother was still alive, and it was the seven of us who were living in a chawl in a backward area of Bombay called Kabootar Khana. It used to be a large and bustling town known as Jai Hind Estate.”

Anil Ambani recalls the time spent with his brothers at Kabootar Khana as a family of seven

The early years of the Ambani brothers were marked by simplicity and shared struggles. Living on the fourth floor of a bustling chawl, the Ambani family of seven resided in a modest one-bedroom hall with a kitchen. In an old interview with Simi Garewal, Anil recalled:

“We used to live on the fourth floor. There was a one-bedroom hall, kitchen, everything combined, no attached toilets, just a common toilet for, you know, maybe a hundred occupants on the same floor. It was in that sort of environment that we grew up in.”

Anil also recalled how even basic amenities like clothing were a shared commodity for them during those days. With limited garments to go around, they devised a practical system of alternating each other’s clothes. Anil Ambani was quoted as:

“We didn’t have lots of clothes to wear between the brothers. So we used to wear each other’s clothes every alternate day. Like he would wear a brown trouser one day and I would wear black ones every day. Then, we would swap trousers and shirts and whatever else.”

Dhirubhai Ambani’s legacy: the Ambani brothers

Dhirubhai’s legacy was carried forward by his sons, Mukesh and Anil Ambani. Mukesh expanded Reliance Industries into global markets, pioneering India’s energy, telecom, and retail sectors. Meanwhile, Anil charted his own path, excelling in infrastructure, entertainment, and power.

However, Anil’s journey wasn’t without its challenges. His billion-dollar empire faced significant financial setbacks, leading to one of the most dramatic corporate downfalls in Indian history. Regardless of his setback, he continues to follow his father’s path and is in the process of rebuilding himself with better resilience.

Today, the Ambanis are celebrated for their towering 27-story residence, extravagant weddings, and transformative business ventures. But behind this grandeur lies a family deeply rooted in hard work and perseverance.
