Known for her versatility, Tillotama joined Arvind Gaur’s Asmita theatre group after graduating from Lady Shri Ram college, Delhi University. She did her Masters in educational theatre at New York University. In 2001, Tillotama made her acting debut in Mira Nair’s Monsoon Wedding, where she played a supporting role. With films like Gangor, Shanghai, Tasher Desh, Children of War, Sir, Angrezi Medium and many others, Tillotama showed versatility.

While Tillotama has been mostly seen in supporting roles, she is hugely applauded for creating a name of her own in the OTT space. The actress did some of the most popular shows, like Mentalhood, Delhi Crime, The Night Manager, Kota Factory and a few others.
Her role as ‘Bindi Jain’ in Tribhuvan Mishra: CA Topper is hailed as one of her best performances. The actress is currently seen in Paatal Lok season 2, in which she plays the role of ‘Meghna Barua’, a Nagaland police officer.
When Tillotama Shome was in New York, she spent two years in New York's infamous Rikers Island Jail to explore the human psychology of prison inmates. She also taught theatre to many murder convicts. In an old interview, Tillotama spoke about the same and said:
“I did not have any kind of training. I came with a completely clean slate. I have not gone to NSD or FTI like other artists. I worked in New York’s Riker Island Jail. It is a high-security jail for men and women. There, I worked with a female prisoner and a male prisoner for two years and to be honest, that’s where I got my acting training. I was there with students as well as prisoners at the same time. There I was able to understand not only crime but also human complexities.”
Tillotama Shome likes to keep her personal life away from media glares. Not many people know this, but she is the daughter-in-law of actress, Jaya Bachchan. In 2015, Tillotama Shome tied the knot with Kunal Ross in a destination wedding in Goa.
Kunal Ross is the son of Nita Bhaduri, who is Jaya Bachchan’s sister. This makes Kunal Jaya’s nephew and Tillotama her daughter-in-law. The entire Bachchan clan, including Jaya Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Shweta Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Aaradhya, attended the wedding. Another interesting part about Tillotama and Kunal's love story is that she didn't know he was related to the Bachchans at the initial period of their relationship.
