In a recent interview, Twinkle Khanna opened up about being raised by a single mother, Dimple Kapadia, after the latter's separation from her husband, Rajesh Khanna.
Actor-turned-writer, Twinkle Khanna is the daughter of veteran actors, late Rajesh Khanna and Dimple Kapadia. The duo tied the knot in 1973 when Dimple was a teenager. However, Rajesh and Dimple had an amicable separation some years later, and their kids, Twinkle and Rinke were largely raised by their mother. Now, Twinkle opened up about being raised by a single mother and mentioned that she might have turned out differently if her parents had stayed together.
In a recent conversation with ace fashion designer, Masaba Gupta on her YouTube channel, Tweak India, the show’s host, Twinkle Khanna opened up about the patriarchal system in our society. Speaking along the same lines, she revealed that her mother, Dimple Kapadia, raised her single-handedly and added:
"I was raised largely by my mother. I would tell you that for the longest time I didn’t know that patriarchy and the patriarchal system existed because I wasn’t in the system."

Twinkle also opened up about how the word 'feminism' was never used in their household, but the people's actions reflected the essence of it. Reflecting on the same, the actress revealed that if her parents had been together, she probably wouldn’t be working constantly. In her words:
“I don’t remember the word feminism being used ever in the household, but it was there. It was in every action, and there was no one else to do it anyway. And I think a lot of drive and ambition comes from that place. I feel, maybe if my parents were together, would I want to constantly be working? I probably wouldn’t.”
Twinkle Khanna also talked about the prospect of growing up in a household under the guidance of both a father and a mother and mentioned that she is often asked what it was like to grow up with famous parents. However, the actress shared that she resented the fact that she was in their shadow by the time she was a teenager, but slowly she realised that she was under their shade. Talking about how her son, Aarav made her realise this, Twinkle said:
“I don’t know any different, so how can I answer that? But what I did feel by the time I was a teenager, I resented the fact that I’m in their shadow. And it’s only now that I realise that I was never in their shadow, I was under their shade. It took me so many years to realise this, especially after I had a child. He doesn’t want us to help him with anything, he wants to do it all on his own. And then you realise, ‘Ok, I was this person once, and I didn’t appreciate it’."
