Urvashi Dholakia Recalls The Difficult Time When She Didn't Have Rs 1500 To Pay Her Kids' Fees

Television actress, Urvashi Dholakia rose to fame with her stint in Ekta Kapoor’s serial, Kasautii Zindagi Kay, where she had played the iconic negative character of ‘Komolika’. Urvashi had got married at the age of 16 and had embraced motherhood within a year. But soon after, she had parted ways with her husband and had decided to raise her twins, Sagar and Kshitij, on her own.

Urvashi had beautifully raised her sons single-handedly and had broken all the stereotypes about being a single mother. Urvashi shares a friendly relationship with her sons, which is pretty evident from her social media as it is full of their hilarious banters. Urvashi aced her role as a single mother and did not compromise on her professional as well as personal life. However, the journey was not easy for her as she had her own share of struggles.

In an interview with Pinkvilla, Urvashi opened up about a bad phase in her life when she had faced a financial crisis and had desperately needed money for her children's education. The actress shared that she had wanted a sum of Rs 3000 and had shot a pilot episode to arrange the money for her sons' fees. However, later, the makers had paid her only half the payment since it was the first episode. Recalling the incident, Urvashi shared:

"I was in my late teens. It has actually stuck with me since and it has only taught me not to be dependent. Not that I was dependent, but it taught me to be a little more careful. At that point in time, I was a little hyper, because you are stuck in that position where you don't know what to do." 

Further in the interview, Urvashi shared that she had felt let down at that time. The actress added that she feels proud of the way she had turned her life. She stated:

"You feel 'what am I gonna do I don't have Rs 1500 to pay for my child's education.' You feel bad, you feel let down, but today when I look back at that time I feel I have done well for myself. Life gives you a lot of obstacles, but you have got to just move on."

In an old interview with Pinkvilla, Urvashi had also talked about how society had behaved when she had decided to be a single mother to her twin sons. She had mentioned that the taboo around being a single mother was there, but it did not affect her. She had also revealed that not only the societal pressure but, in her family, too, people were hesitant about her single mother status. She had also stated that nowadays, it is not a big deal, but the scenario was completely different 25 years back.

In a 2016 interview with the Hindustan Times, the Dekh Bhai Dekh actress had revealed that many people had questioned her for being a single mother, but she had taken those comments positively. Sharing that she is proud of her journey, Urvashi had said:

“Being a single mother was difficult. People tell me how I don’t look like a mother and how I haven’t aged. It’s amusing. Why will I age? I am 37. Many harp over the fact that I had my sons when I was 17. But what is the big deal? I take these comments in a positive way. I am proud of my journey, which has been a long one.”

On the work front, Urvashi is currently seen on the show, Naagin 6.
