Actress, Urvashi Rautela recently opened up about filmmakers using dark makeup to 'tone down' her fairness. Her remarks incited trolling as well as serious comments about 'brownface' from netizens.
Bollywood beauty, Urvashi Rautela is an actress as well as the titleholder for several pageants. Since she made her pageant debut with Miss Teen India 2009 and her film debut with Singh Saab The Great, Urvashi has dominated the headlines for various reasons, be it her professional front, her personal life, or the incessant trolling she suffers online. Recently, the actress sat down for an interview as part of the promotions for her upcoming film, Daaku Maharaj. However, the comments she made about having to apply dark makeup caught the eye of netizens, who trolled her yet again.
Urvashi Rautela, who is gearing up for the release of her upcoming film, Daaku Maharaj, opposite Nandamuri Balakrishna, recently sat down for an interview with Pinkvilla. During the same, she discussed the makeup done on her for the film and stated that it was common in Bollywood and the South film industry for directors to apply 'dark makeup' on her. In fact, the same had been done for her latest movie as well.
Urvashi stated that such makeup might often be a character requirement. However, she had never had a problem with it because she recognised that the film was based on the director's vision, so the character needed to fit that concept. Urvashi continued:
"Iska bahut zyada aata hai ki Urvashi aap bohot fair hai. Isko aap thora tone down karo. 10 shades dark karo, 12 shades dark karo. Love Dose ki hi baat karle agar toh Yo Yo Honey Singh ne mujhe bola ki Urvashi isko aap pura 10 shades dark karo."
Urvashi then narrated that her Caribbean makeup artist on the Love Dose sets applied her makeup using the darkest shade of her palette. She also noted Honey Singh made this choice because he liked 'dusky girls.'
The clip of Urvashi Rautela's interview was soon uploaded to Reddit, and netizens rushed to the comment section with their thoughts. One user stated, "Then they should hire the dusky girls instead of her, what's this bs," while another penned, "How much she wants to whitewash her already 'white' skin." Other netizens brought up a more valid point regarding 'brownface,' which is considered an offensive practice. On the note, one user wrote, "Casual racism. 'First Indian actress to do this brown face,' jk."

In an earlier interview with iDiva, Urvashi cheekily admitted that dating an older man in real life was out of the question. But in terms of her professional life, she is eagerly looking forward to breaking her own record. Speaking about her upcoming film, Urvashi addressed her massive age gap with veteran actor, Nandamuri Balakrishna and said:
"Yes, there was 38 years of age gap between me and Sunny Deol (in Singh Saab The Great), but now I'm breaking that record. I'm doing NBK 109, which is a big-budget, massy South film. I'm paired opposite Balakrishna guru, and between us, the age gap is… He's in his 60s or 70s, and it's the biggest age gap in the history of Indian cinema."
