Throwback to the time when Kumar Gaurav broke his engagement with Raj Kapoor's daughter, Rima Kapoor and Vijayta Pandit was blamed for it.
The 1981 film, Love Story was a trendsetter, categorised as a cult romantic film of that era. The film also launched two fresh faces, Kumar Gaurav (lovingly called Bunty) and Vijayta Pandit. Apart from the story, people fell in love with the debut stars. Men would be charmed by Vijayta Pandit, and girls drooled over Kumar Gaurav.
Kumar Gaurav was the son of veteran star, Rajendra Kumar and was tagged as the next big thing in Hindi cinema after his debut film. His on-screen romance with Vijayta in their debut film paved the way for their off-screen romance. Soon, the two fell head over heels in love. But, his father was not happy with their relationship.
Since Rajendra Kumar wanted to marry his son to a girl who belonged to a reputed family, he finalised his son’s alliance with Raj Kapoor’s daughter, Rima Kapoor (now Rima Jain). Kumar Gaurav got engaged to Rima, which was attended by the who's who of the filmy world.
Despite being engaged to Rima, Kumar was in love with Vijayta. In an interview with Lehren Retro, Vijayta talked about Kumar Gaurav’s engagement with Rima and stated that she, too, attended the same. In her words:
“I saw that Rima had given a large diamond to him. He was getting so angry and he told me ‘if you don’t like it, I will throw it away’. I ran from there.”
Rajendra Kumar tried to end his son Kumar Gaurav’s relationship with Vijayta Pandit by getting him engaged. Despite his engagement with Rima Kapoor, Kumar Gaurav continued seeing Vijayta. When Vijayta’s parents objected, the actor promised to marry their daughter.
According to multiple reports, as stories about Kumar Gaurav and Vijayta Pandit’s brewing romance started appearing in the media, his engagement with Rima was called off. Gaurav decided to call off the engagement, and both families agreed not to proceed with the wedding arrangements. Vijayta was blamed for the actor’s broken engagement.
However, it was Vijayta who got the biggest shock of her life when she found out that Kumar Gaurav was seeing Sunil Dutt and Nargis’ daughter, Namrata Dutt. In the same interview with Lehren Retro, Vijayta Pandit broke her silence on Kumar Gaurav’s broken engagement and revealed the truth behind it. Talking about the same, she stated:
“A few days later, I got to know that he was having an affair with Namrata Dutt. He broke his engagement with Reema but I had nothing to do with it.”
From his acting days, Kumar Gaurav had a great friendship with Namrata's brother, Sanjay Dutt, which is how he met Namrata. The duo fell in love, dated for two years, and tied the knot in 1984. Namrata and Kumar Gaurav welcomed two daughters, Saachi Kumar and Siya Kumar.
Although Kumar’s debut film was a blockbuster, he couldn't keep up the level of his performance, and soon, he started getting out of the limelight. After continuous flops, the actor quit showbiz. Some state that Kumar’s downfall was because of his relationship with Vijayta Pandit, while others claim that it was his ego and ungrateful attitude. After quitting Hindi cinema, Kumar Gaurav ventured into the construction industry and also runs a travel management company called Island Holidays.
