Take a look at the tumultuous and rather controversial love life of eminent filmmaker, Vikram Bhatt.
Vikram Bhatt has been one of the most renowned filmmakers in the Hindi film industry. He is especially remembered for creating the horror film series, Raaz. He was born in Gujarat and is the son of eminent yesteryear cinematographers, Pravin Bhatt. He began his career as an assistant director in various films, however, it was with his film, Jaanam in 1993 that he began his directorial journey with. However, quite different to his professional life has been his personal life, which has been no less than a rollercoaster ride. Well then, let us dive straight into it.
Vikram Bhatt tied the knot for the first time with his childhood sweetheart, Aditi Bhatt. The couple were young lovers and they had dated for almost ten years before tying the knot in a private and close-knit ceremony. The duo got promoted as parents in 1994 with the arrival of their daughter, Krishna. However, troubles soon crept up in the marital bliss of Vikram and Aditi, making them decide to quit their marriage. It was reported that Aditi never received the same kind of respect in marriage from Vikram or from her in-laws, which made her marriage unbearable. But things took a turn for the worse when reports of Vikram’s involvement with former Miss Universe, Sushmita Sen was learnt by Aditi. She finally broke her marriage and divorced Vikram in 1998.

Unfortunately, the decision of divorce between Vikram and Aditi was followed by a long and nasty battle, followed by a fight for custody of their daughter, Krishna. The duo openly accused one another during the proceedings in public, grabbing all the unnecessary attention. There was also an angle of alimony, which had grabbed headlines back in the day. In one of his earlier interviews with TOI, Vikram had once recalled how he never could be a good husband or a boyfriend, and added that he was the root cause of his failed relationships. In his words:
“My failings are the result of my own inter-personal abilities. I am not a good husband or boyfriend. I have grown up as a single child and live in a world of my own. I am someone who can share my thoughts with someone, but after a point cannot share my life with anyone. I can have spurts of romance but am not consistently romantic. I am not what a girl dreams of. “
Reportedly, the reason behind Vikram Bhatt’s failed marriage with his first wife, Aditi was because of his affair with Sushmita Sen. The duo started their fling during the shoot of the latter’s film, Dastak. Their link-up had been a matter of grave concern since Vikram had still been married to his first wife when he dated Sushmita. But, their relationship ended just as quickly as it had started. Vikram, in one of his later interviews had pointed out that the age gap between him and Sushmita was the sole reason for their breakup. He mentioned that Sushmita was too naïve and immature at that point to understand anything. Sadly, after his breakup with Sushmita, Vikram’s career too took an unexpected downfall. Speaking up on this portion of his love life, Vikram, in an older interview with the Hindustan Times had said:
“We were too young, I was 27 and she was 20 years old. I was only Sushmita Sen’s boyfriend, I was depressed, I missed my daughter like crazy…I had just made a mess of my life.”
After Sushmita Sen’s episode in her life, another actress stepped into Vikram Bhatt’s life, and it was none other than Kaho Na Pyaar Hai fame, Ameesha Patel. Reportedly, Ameesha and Vikram got to know each other even before the former had made her film debut. The duo’s bonding grew when Vikram roped in Ameesha for the film, Ankahee, which was supposedly based on his own life. They never kept their relationship under wraps and often made public appearances. Speaking about their dating phase, Vikram, in an interview had once mentioned:
“At this point of time she’s chasing her career, and I’m chasing her. I’m ready whenever she is. This relationship is for keeps. But I don’t want to say much. In the past I’ve been terribly hurt after taking a relationship to my heart.”

Sadly, this affair too came to an unexpected end when Ameesha’s troubles with her father over a money-distortion case brought cracks in her love life with Vikram. While he was there with him all throughout her tough phase, nevertheless the couple realised that their relationship was futile. Thus, after dating for a long period of five years, Ameesha and Vikram broke up with one another. Vikram once opened up on his broken relationship with Ameesha and had mentioned that perhaps they had misunderstood their friendship for something else. In his words:
“I don’t think we ever loved each other. Ameesha had problems of her own with her parents and we both shared a period of our lives where we were going through a low phase in our career. We now realize that actually, we were just good friends who mistook it for love. We still remain friends. She is a lovely girl and I only wish good things for her.
Nearly 22 years post his divorce, Vikram Bhatt gave marriage a second chance when he secretly tied the knot with art connoisseur, Shwetambari Soni in 2020. He had kept his relationship and later his decision for marriage hidden from everyone around him, including his own daughter, Krishna. It was only that people got to know about the same when he shared the pictures of his wife on his social media handle, a day after his marriage in order to wish her on her birthday. Vikram’s daughter, Krishna Bhatt had opened up in an interview and revealed how she got to know about his father’s second marriage quite later. In her words:
“I found out about my dad’s wedding much later. He thought I was a little girl who wouldn’t be able to face this news. I suppose for your parents, you never grow up. He broke it to me quite suddenly as is his usual way. But, it is what it is."
While much has been already known about his personal life in the media, people still wonder as to why Vikram Bhatt never really married the divas, Sushmita Sen or Ameesha Patel, despite being in a serious relationship with both of them. Speaking about the same in a previous interview with the Times Of India, he mentioned:
“No, I didn’t want to marry either of them. And it’s not like there’s any bitterness. There’s too much water under the bridge now. My loyalty and commitment are paramount when it comes to my daughter. But when it comes to a man-woman relationship, I am commitment phobic and am a loner. It's purely circumstantial that I did not get married to either of them.”
